I remember Sandaime having a crystal ball, that he used like a portable CCTV to monitor the ins and outs of Konoha. This Crystal ball may come handy in monitoring the battle field.

It would be pretty handy, but you have to know the individuals chakra pattern for it to work. So I guess in theory it could have been used, but only in conjunction with the division commanders.

it's either Kishi forgot about it..or there's no shinobi powerful enough to use any of Sandaime's tools.

The 3rd Hokage has a library of Jutsu.. sadly, Tsunade didn't even bothered to check it... fatal mistake!
