(This'll be long, try to bear with me hahah xD grab a snack or something)
I'm a diehard Sonic fan, but it saddens me to see that they have taken a major step back with their latest release; Sonic: The Lost World
I was really hyped for the next 3D Sonic game after the release of Sonic Generations (best Sonic game since the Sega Genesis days of Sonic) but ultimately this game was a failure. Worst Sonic game since Sonic '06, if not the worst big release sonic game ever IMO. One thing that should be pointed right off the bat is that Sonic is known for his speed. Yet in Lost World he moves so slow compared to any major Sonic release. That is a no-no.
Second, the levels are extremely repetitive. This may be debated amongst you, but while the levels have their own uniqueness, traveling on the same cylindrical worlds after a while gets sort of irritating.
I could go on and on, but I'll spare you of having to truly understand just how terrible this is. The main point I'm trying to get across is that Sega needs to make Sonic games that use a gameplay formula with tweaks every release. And the formulas that have been enjoyed by Sonic fans alike have been the gameplay formula of Sonic Unleashed (daytime levels), Colors and Generations, as well as the equally praised Sonic Adventure series formula.
This it is only reasonable to do this: Sega needs to focus on making sonic games that utilize those two formulas and alternate between games on which formula to use. And then throw in some different formulas to give you something new, and if positively received, branch off and alternate between THREE formulas (of course, you don't want too much)
And the best way to start that trend is to make the next game Sonic Adventure 3. It has been long awaited and much pre hype will be built, leading to very high sales and preorders. Plus, the though of it being on next gen consoles would be beautiful.
As a very devout sonic fan since I was a child, I hope Sega can take a similar path as I believe this is the key to reviving the franchise to it's former glory, which it still retains but to a lesser degree. To fellow Sonic followers, which road should Sega take? What should the next title be? I'd like to know your thoughts.
