Neither forms of government function with the industrial technology pursued by today's societies of all orders.
The only long term successful government structure Russia could pursue is a genuine republic based off of free market axioms. Anything else fails under hyper inflation within 100 years of establishment of the centralized banking necessary for other forms of government to perpetuate the illusion of functionality.
Systems of real money break the living shit out of socialist and communist economies. Authoritarian governments can work - but with the resources available to the average citizen in industrialized nations, authoritarian regimes simply can't project power into their extremities to avoid losing control of them.
Yugoslavia was probably one of the most vast of the modern day authoritarian style governments - and it failed to succeed power.
Not that it would stop people from trying.
The U.S. is trying its damnedest to implement communism. We'll break before we can actually get there. We will probably break within a year from now. I give 60-70% odds. The five year prognosis approaches 100%.
