2 pair of eyes

Help me understand this
People say you need two pair of MS to unlock EMS and thats why you cant exchange eyes between two uchiha
But what happens to those eyes,you only have 2 spaces to put them in and its not like you shove 2 eyeballs in one hole so both can fit !_!
What exactly happens to the old eyes then?

You take out your own eyes, set them aside, and have a third party transfer your brother's eyes to you. Thus gaining EMS if correctly done. That's why it needs 2 pairs. There's some aspect(love, I think) that hasn't been discused which why it's only worked for Madara and Sasuke.
