as you can see from the picture there a red moon behind him and usally when we see this in naruto its because of a genjutsu or tsukyomi or some kind he could have retreated with the 1st hokage blood aka dna and then spent this whole time unlocking the rinnegan but by that time he was to weak and old to use it so he had no choice and used zetsu to kill nagato mum an dad and implant the rinnegan to nagato so that he would later be revived via ressurection path what eva its called i fink its deva path what do you guys think?

i was trying to say he didnt unlock the renningan on the battle field against 1st hokage but when he was to old to use it thats why kabuto said i revived you at your best that being young and with the renningan
