It was a tragedy, and you really can't help but grieve for the nearly three thousand people who died during the attacks. So much so that even as young as I was I have very faint recollection of the sheer chaos of it, but...

Honestly, without any disrespect, if this had happened in any other country in the whole world, people would have long forgotten it. And I do see why its as big a deal as it is from a logical perspective, but I can't help but wonder if the people would've been grieved for in the same extent had it happened literally anywhere else.

There are people getting killed in Myanmar and no one gives a damn. It's not even in news.

Not really. People celebrate or remember deaths/killing that happened 2000 to 1500 years ago too if they care enough. Some are still sore at whole ethnic groups for few deaths that long back.

Point being that if this wasn't an incident in the US, people wouldn't care enough.

What is your definition of people?

People care more if it hits their own interests or something they are more sympathetic to. Naruko here worries about Myanmar. Do you think she would care if it were not the ethnic group she has sympathies for? Half the time one can guess the background of the person showing the level of interest in such an incident or the level of off handed dismissal for that matter.

Really depends. we as the US have always had this belief of untouchability, so when some loons flew planes into the world trade center it became kind of hard to forget. If it had happened in another country with sky scrapers and every other element in the incident, I'm sure we'd still remember.

Everyone has sympathies for humans, unless they are cold hearted, some people have more interest in some places that's true, but it's not like if it's only something that is related to me or something I have interest in it, I will only care for that.

People in the original sentence would refer to people all around the globe.

In a general sense, everyone from everywhere knows about 9/11 and its tragedy, but the point is that if it had happened anywhere else in the world, it would have long been forgotten. Whether this is wrong or right, that's not the point, if I had to label it with a point though, that would be that maybe by now everybody should've moved on.

Well, most definitely, but I doubt everyone would grieve about it still.

Many people are being burned in Myanmar , ISIS is killing too many people , Israel has always had problems with Muslims , etc .
None of these are going to be remembered after 16 years ...
Unfortunately , Your life isn't worthy if you were born in a poor country ...
