Nowadays when I see a pokemon card/advertisement/etc at a store the pokemon look like they were drawn up my a "modern artist" - it's pathetic!

Well numbers were just assigned for the purposes of coding for the games. It wasn't really a ranking system or chronological in any way.

Although I think it was somewhat done on a scale from common to rare, though it's not completely consistent in that.

Good point but still, mewtwo was a scientific experiment from a mew so
1. they knew about mew first
2. it is likely there are more mews since only one mewtwo
