what do you mean by intoxicating? you mean ,like drunk?

If you chew, or eat the young ones a lot, you can get quite high of it.

Betel leaves are usually the wrapping around small stuff that you can chew/eat. Given at wedding, for example. Some people in Nepal/India chew it all day, but it's very bad for your teeth, and like every rush/or high, socially a bit awkward.

Betle leaf is too mild. The problem is mostly areca nut and tobacco which many people add in the mix wrapped in betel leaf.
