Terrific soundtracks and visual effects and I liked the props they used. It bothers me when they use half-assed props in fantasy movies as it makes everything look silly, for example Eragon was a huge disappointment.
The plot though was shallow and flat. People who have played WoW probably knew most of the characters and places, which automatically generates more depth to how they experience the movie. However for people who have not played the game, it just goes randomly from one place to another; from one character to another while it's unclear exactly how they fit into this fictional world. It's vital when you make a movie that's based in a fictional world that people get the impression that this movie is nothing more than one particular episode in that world and not that the world only exists in the movie and it's here Warcraft kinda failed. They went from one location to another while it was not clear how far apart these locations are and where they stand overall in this world. The only geographical overview we saw, was when they were having a war meeting to discuss their next course of action and this wasn't really much to go on. Same thing with the different characters and races. How do dwarves, elves, men and the like relate to one another? What is the Guardian? All of these things only seem to have been added for the sake of the movie rather than being a genuine part of the fictional world.
It already started with the beginning of the movie where you see a knight fighting an orc and then they jump back in time to explain how it all started, so essentially the movie behaves like a prequel, but it's a prequel of nothing as it's the first movie. An eternal conflict between orcs and men was a non-existing issue. So the creators messed up in how they wanted the movie to be perceived.
