Appearance: Izaya has the appearance of someone who is extremely cunning and crafty, some people would go as far as to tell him that he looks like a fox, an image that he lives up to. Izaya wears a black short sleeved shirt under a black hoodie line with fur at the cuffs and hood-He leaves his hoodie un-zipped most of the time. On his left hip, he keeps his sheathed katana. He wears twin rings on each of his index fingers which some say metaphorically symbolizes how his heart does not belong to any individual person (Instead of proposing with a wedding ring, it’s as if he’s married to himself).
Personality: As his appearance entails, he is quite cunning and clever and confident individual. He claims to “love all humans” because they are the most interesting creatures on the planet. People often describe this love of his as an unnatural complex for humankind. He gets pleasure by putting people through miserable and chaotic situations to observe their reactions. His love for humankind is never returned and most people view him more as an eye sore than anything. Though he does love all humans, his love does not and has never belonged to one specific individual, including his family. With a thorough understanding of human behavior and tendencies, he is able to determine people's thoughts and predict their reactions with high accuracy.
He has a very jolly and mocking personality, speaking informally with most people as if they are close friends and often using nicknames. Izaya likes to play a twisted board game which involves moving a combination of Chess, Othello and Shogi pieces on a Chinese Go board. He plays this game by himself in his room. The combination of games may be a representation of the many plots being acted out throughout the ninja world, illustrating how Izaya watches over and manipulates the various people .The rules he plays by are also beyond normal people, which seems to be a metaphor for the way he lives his life.
Although Izaya enjoys conflict, often showing up wherever there is potential for one, he usually stays out of it, preferring to observe the fight instead of directly taking part in it. Izaya Orihara was born into a high class elite family within the land of iron. Izaya’s father was a renowned swordsman who once served under the Shogun as a member of the elite Mimawarigumi police enforcement faction; His mother was less into fighting and more into the arts, such as music and what not. His family was made up of celebrities with close relations to the government and the Shogun, and as such Izaya would have a luxurious and spoiled childhood-Along with his twin younger sisters.
Being members of an elite celebrity family meant that reputation was everything. If Izaya or either of his sisters would do anything to tarnish the name and reputation that their family had built over generations, they received a harsh scolding. His family would spend a majority of their time attending upper class parties and leaving him alone; His childhood was lonely, though he was strangely satisfied with the life he lived.
At the age of seven he was enrolled in a private school for “gifted youngsters.” Izaya was quiet and often kept to himself, not making many friends. He excelled in his studies, earning top marks on both physical and written examinations. Spending most of his time alone, it gave him an opportunity to observe the typical behavior and mannerisms of the people around him. In his time alone, his personality began to change, he became more and more interested in the way a person would react when confronted with a typical situation, though no one would really notice. Though he never did manage to make any true friends, he did manage to make an enemy of Shizuo Heiwajima in his final year of school.
After his graduation, it was decided by his father that Izaya would learn the way of the sword to follow traditions. He used money to hire the greatest swordsmen that money could buy in order to train his son while he was away. Like an obedient son, he dutifully trained to fulfill the traditions of his family and to please his father.
Through years of dutiful training, Izaya managed to acquire heightened levels of strength and stamina beyond what he thought he was initially capable of. He was taught how to conceal his presence within the shadows along with the ways of assassination. He also demonstrated knowledge of parkour in several of his training sessions. His teacher’s eyes filled with pride as they watched him grow more experienced with a blade in his hands.
Though his father wouldn’t usually give him the time of day, Izaya couldn’t help but feel that if he made great progress he may finally earn the attention of his father. Unfortunately, it was around this time that his father passed away of an unknown illness that had been eating away at him for some time. Whereas most people would mourn the death of someone who was so close to them, Izaya felt somewhat satisfied-He would no longer have to strive to please a man that couldn’t care less about him. It was at his father’s funeral that he decided to live his life the way he chose.
Around the age of eighteen, sometime after his father’s passing, Izaya was inducted into the Mimawarigumi to follow in his father’s footsteps. He would hold the position of Vice-Captain and loyally serve the government and the Shogun, although this was not something he was intent on doing. As a man with many close ties to the higher ups of the land's government, as well as a member of an elite police task force, large sums of information were available to Izaya. Rather than to dutifully serve the the Shogun, he would use this newly formed tie to gather information about inside matters.
Only after just joining the Mimawarigumi did he discover that the former Shogun was manipulating the current one and was still highly active in terms of decision making on which course the Land of Iron would take. He was using his former position and the respect that came with it to assert himself back into the government and manipulating various peoples. Along with this information, he also discovered that recently there had been an increasing number of gangs or groups of ronin gathering in feeble attempts to overthrow the government. It was then that he formulated a long term plan to ignite the flames of war from within one country-After all, all it takes it the will of a single man to bring about war.
As a member of the Mimawarigumi, Izaya was given the right to eliminate any ronin he may come across on sight with no questions asked, as long as there was proof that this person was indeed a rebel patriot. Using this right to his advantage, Izaya began to extort small sums of money and underground information in exchange for providing protection from the authorities to a group known as Ragnarok. Ragnarok was a highly aggressive band of thugs who were un-deserving of being called true patriots. While providing them with protection and stealing their information on rival gangs and enemies, Izaya lulled Ragnarok into a false sense of security. It was all according to plan.
As time went on, Izaya used this information to assist a second group of ronin, known then as the Yatagarasu. The Yatagarasu were weaker in terms of fighting when compared to Ragnarok, but they possessed greater numbers. Whereas Ragnarok was a group of aggressive thugs, the Yatagarasu were a group of ronin who truly loved their home country and would fight to protect the ideals that it was founded upon. Using the information provided by Izaya, Yatagarasu were finally able to overwhelm Raganrok with their sheer numbers and new fighting strength.
In one foul swoop, Izaya manipulated Ragnarok so that they would be nearly eliminated by the Yatagarasu. Afterwards he would call in his task force from the Mimawarigumi and have the remaining portion of Ragnarok arrested and tried for their crimes. Because the higher ups of Ragnarok “happened” to be killed, none of them could identify the man who was pulling the strings, Izaya.
In the end, Izaya managed to completely erase one gang of thugs from his country, earning him the trust of the government. Because of the information he provided to the Yatagarasu, they too were in his debt and would obey any information he provided them with, despite the fact that they knew he was a conniving bastard. Even if they wanted to be rid of Izaya, killing a federal officer would mean their haeds-And on top of that, Izaya possessed information that could put them away at any moment if they exhibited any hesitation in following orders.
Things as usual were going all according to plan for Izaya, and he couldn’t help but laugh at how easily humans were to read.
A few years later, another group of ronin had risen. They were angry at the state of their country, as well as the planned assassination of their beloved master by the government. Their goal was to change the country for the better and overthrow the Shogun in the name of prospering peace. The moment they had risen, Izaya seized his chance.
He quickly discovered the leader of the new group, Valkyrie, and had a brief discussion with him. Unlike what he was accustomed to, their leader would not blindly follow Izaya’s orders. He claimed that it was people like Izaya that were the reason for him forming Valkyrie and wanting to overthrow the government and change the country. At first Izaya had appeared displeased, but began laughing afterwards, replying by saying “wrong answer” and slaying the leader.
Izaya would go on to serve as the leader of Valkyrie, having a middle man to deliver messages and assert orders given from him. It was only after a thorough examination of the members within Valkyrie that for the first time, something would not go according to his plans. One of the ronin within the group happened to be his former classmate and long enemy, Shizuo Heiwajima.
The reason Izaya had always hated Shizuo is because of the fact that he is considered “dangerous and uncontrollable.” He does not listen to reason and was considered a beast in Izya’s eyes. Shizuo was the only person that Izaya could not control, and this would prove to be a problem-Thoguh he would not let this stop his plans.
As time went on, Izaya would use the information at his disposal to slowly but surely pit the Yatagarasu at Valkyrie’s throats and instigate violence between them. Meanwhile this was happening; He would feed Valkyrie information on the government to ready them for rebellion. The pieces we removing into place, and Izaya decided to initiate his plan.
Manipulating Valkyrie, he would have them charge the Shogun’s castle head on in an attempt to overthrow the Shogun. While they were to do that, the Mimawarigumi as well as the other law enforcement factions were made aware of the attack at just the right time. Following this, the Yatagarasu would be sent to the Shogun’s castle, ready to attack but initially unaware of the presence of Valkyrie.
With the board in place like this, Valkyrie would attack the castle; Meanwhile law enforcement would slay the rebels. The Yatagarasu would arrive and create chaos by attacking and killing the Shogun’s forces, while also killing members of Valkyrie by utilizing the opportunity presented to them-This was how he thought things would play out, but things weren’t quite this simple.
As the rebellion went underway, Izaya was confronted by members of the Naraku, a group of highly skilled assassins who specialized in observation and elimination without ever being detected. For almost half a year, the former Shogun had been aware of Izaya’s plan thanks to some snooping done by his elite force. The only reason Izaya was led on for so long was so that he would gather all of the former Shogun’s enemies in a single place to be eliminated one after the other. The members of Valkyrie and Yatagarasu were being slayed near instantly.
Just before Izaya could be killed off by the Naraku, he was spotted by a member of Valkyire, the one and only Shizuo Heiwajima. He interrupted Izaya’s fight in order to directly attack Izaya himself, which also meant defeating the Naraku assassins-It may not have been mentioned before, but Heiwajima is well known for having exceptional strength and kenjutsu prowess beyond what is thought to be humanly possible. In a blind fury, Shizuo managed to kill of the Naraku one by one in order to cut a path to Izaya-It was his opportunity to finally purge the world of his most hated enemy; Ironically it was his choice of actions that would end up saving the life of Izaya, who used the commotion to escape with his life. After defeat and humiliation, along with the vicious Shizuo Jeiwajima waiting for him, Izaya decided to leave his home in the Land of Iron and travel the world abroad.
Leaving his family behind, he left to travel the world and served as an underground information broker.

Izaya Orihara is a "traceur," or in other words a practitioner of parkour. Parkour is a physical discipline and non-competitive sport which focuses on efficient movement around obstacle. The main purpose of the discipline is to teach participants how to move through their environment by vaulting, rolling, running, climbing, and leaping-Though he doesn’t physically compete in the sport, but incorporates such movements in his style of fighting and as such his movements are notably nimble.
On his right hip, Izaya carries with him his katana. At first glance, it appears to be a nodochi because of the length of the scabbard-This is because of a hidden tanto within the back end of the scabbard for when he wishes to utilize a two sword fighting style. He procured the blade form the corpse of the former leader of Valkyrie, and to this day still uses it as a symbol of what he’s “achieved” in his past.
