Ryu is portrayed as a Japanese man whose basic and most recognizable attire consists of medium-length brown hair, brown eyes, a long, red headband, a white karate gi with the sleeves ripped off at the shoulders, completely bare feet, and a black belt. In many of his appearances, Ryu carries around a large, white duffel bag containing items important to his travels, such as clothing, Food, Weapons (such as kunais, shuriken, etc), and local currency. At times he will be seen fashioning the same attire with slight differences. His clothing more torn, & usually a darker colour to his normal (gray or black. Ryu also has a long katana placed against his hip, the blade itself is a crimson red.

Personality
Ryu is usually a silent, humble, serious individual whose severity is often juxtaposed against the light-hearted, fiery persona of his best friend, Ken. He travels the globe with a stern nature, often appearing to others as boring or detached. On rare occasion, Ryu shows a very bad sense of humor. Ryu plays the part of the wandering warrior, and takes both his travels and his training very seriously. Although he appears to be aloof and unemotional, Ryu is actually a kind and good-hearted person. He respects others with skills. He is still very quiet and reserved, but is willing to greet people with a smile and some kind advice.
When angered Ryu takes on a complete opposite of his original personality, Giving him the nickname "Evil Ryu". As Evil Ryu, he becomes quite demonic and rage-driven; while his anger is not mindless, he has cast aside his respectful ways. Like Akuma, he enjoys power, and seeks strong warriors to fight to the death with. He truly hates what he perceives as weakness from humanity, such as love, family, justice and vengeance. He is also extremely brutal towards fighters in general, especially those that try to oppose him. Also like Akuma, Evil Ryu is also dark and completely cold-blooded, and refers to himself as a demon. However, a difference between Akuma and Evil Ryu is that Akuma will only kill a worthy opponent, while Evil Ryu is determined to kill any fighter who even appears to be in his way.

Unkown to his own birthplace, Ryu had spent his childhood in a simple dojo. Ryu was seen as a child prodigy within the arts of Taijutsu, unmatched by any other opponent & even a number of high level shinobi. As Ryu had grown through the years his passion for martial arts had followed & grown, to the point that he decided he had been taught everything he could from his dojo & should explore the ninja world to see what more could be taught to him through his opponent's fist. Even though it was not thought out, Ryu had faith in simply following his path & dedicating himself to consuming as much knowledge as possible. Attempting to learn all the different styles the world could offer him & face all those willing to accept his challenge, going against all those he viewed as loyal to their craft.
