Looks:
Luffy is renowned for his trademark straw hat (from which he gets his nickname "Straw Hat Luffy"), which was lent to him when he was young by his first sensei, who in turn received it from his sensei when he was a child. He wears short trousers along with sandals and a sleeveless red vest. Luffy also has a scar with two stitches underneath his left eye (which he earned by stabbing a knife under his eye to show a peer that he was tough) and short black hair. He was severely wounded by an opposing Shinobi during the last great ninja war, leaving a large X-shaped scar on his chest. Appearing to be scrawny underneath his shirt, he has a surprisingly well-built physique.
Luffy wears an open, long-sleeved red cardigan with four buttons (which shows the X-shaped scar covering most of his chest), with a yellow sash tied around his waist. He is of average height, and is shown to be significantly more muscular due to his training.
Personality:
Luffy's two dominant traits are his apparent lack of intelligence and his utter fearlessness. Luffy can easily be amazed by the simplest things, such as hermit crabs, and can be confused by concepts such as that by digging a hole right next to another he may be unintentionally filling the other hole. Also, larger concepts, such as when his fellow shinobi try to explain something to him, he will instantly call a mystery. He likes monsters and will ask weird creatures to join him. He also has no knowledge of medicine, when a friend had a high fever he told her to eat cold food and later tried to make another teammate better by pouring sake onto him simply because the man liked sake. When attempting to think up a plan to get off of an island, while he managed to make some sense of where to look, he notes that he is going to feel sick from too much thinking.
If Luffy finds something he does not understand, even if someone explains in detail, he calls it a "mystery thing". One of Luffy's personality traits involves asking "non-humans" such as clan members with notable appearance traits if they can poop, in which case the answer is usually a yes.
The same cannot be said when he is on the field of battle, though. It is known that Luffy's instinct and behavior is similar to that of a wild animal's, like when he knows who he has to fight before he even gets to the battle. Even his fights show this as he relies on his instincts and counter attacks. This compliments the way he views the world. He is most often seen smiling, except in a fight where he is forced to use all his power (and sometimes even then). Luffy also seems to rarely change personality wise. Because he views the world in a straightforward and simple manner, he is occasionally the only person who can see past events that have taken place and realize the true goal, yet at other times he can fall into the simplest of traps.

History:
Sadness is an ever present emotion wherever we go. No matter how far we hide there will always be pain. It is an inescapable human truth. Through sadness, hate is born and through hate, there is regret. Having regret one can begin to forgive oneself and others for causing that sadness. Only through that revelation can one awaken and begin to heal what he has destroyed. Our tale begins with a little boy named Luffy.
Now this isn't a normal happy tale one would sit down and tell their children at bedtime but it was his story nonetheless. Our hero was born to two loving parents in the Land of Fire and a place called the Village Hidden Amongst the Leaves, Konohagakure. Luffy was born into a happy and loving home. He remembers a big house and many servants. There was always happy days for him until the time of his third birthday. He can't remember well but something had happened and he had to flee with his father. His mother had stayed behind but he couldn't make heads or tails why she had. But ever since he was three it had always been him and his dad. They roamed the countryside in search of adventures and a place to stay. Luffy felt so proud to have such a strong and brave father. He taught him how to hunt, fight, and the basics on survival. For a while Luffy felt happy and grateful that he had such a great role model to guide him and one that Luffy hoped would be there for the rest of his life. Little did he know of what was to befall him shortly.
While one day out in the Rain Country, the two had gone on a bounty mission to hunt down a giant boar. Luffy was six at the time and his father had been well into his forties. They went to the rocky hills where there was a dark, giant cave. It housed the dreaded Demon Boar they had come to kill for money. The entered in, knowing little that only one would survive. As they entered they took caution when stepping in making sure they do not wake the beast. Luffy's father had a bright torch in his hand and a sword in the other followed by Luffy who had a bow and arrow on him ready to shoot. The more they went in the darker it got and the louder the snoring of the boar could be heard. Once they came to the huge inner cave, Luffy's father placed the torch on a pedestal that was near the entrance to the inner cave and the two proceeded forward. The cave was very big with a huge opening in the ceiling where the bright, full moon could be seen in plain view. The two stood there contemplating on the task ahead and how they were going to get out alive but they knew they had no choice. They took a deep breath and proceeded.
Luffy's father channeled his chakra to his lungs and molded it as he performed six handsigns. He inhaled until his chest became full and as he exhaled a giant fireball shot out of his mouth that headed for the beast. As the beast roared loudly, Luffy, using his keen eyesight, shot several arrows at the eyes of the boar, effectively blinding him. His father proceeded running forward and channeling his chakra to his fist and hitting the boar in the stomach and pushing it back. He then proceeded with several blows to the boar to get it to give up so they can kill it. Meanwhile Luffy aimed at several positions on the boar to see which would cause him great pain. The beast writhed in pain as it charged forward towards the sound of Luffy. Luffy tried to run away but tripped on a rock and hurt his ankle. His father saw the desperation and ran towards him as the boar kicked its hooves in the air as it was ready to strike at Luffy. His Father then stepped in and pushed him out of the way and as the beast was about to stomp, his Father placed his sword out in front and channeled his chakra into the blade. Lightning could be seen coming from the blade and along with the crackling sound the blade also grew upwards towards the beast and stabbed it. However he didn't anticipate that the beast would fall forward. He tried to escape but he couldn't run far enough and he had already exhausted his chakra. A dark shadow fell over his father and the beast fell right on top of him. It crushed him and only the father's upper torso could be seen. He lifted his hand and hoped to reach his son. Luffy ran towards his father and the two spoke.
(Shocked) "Father....wait here I'll go get someone and..."
(Interrupts) No...Luffy....this is where my journey ends.....it's my time now....(coughs blood)
But...but I want to save you dad!
It is too late, Luffy......promise me something....
(coughs blood)
(Luffy holds his fathers hand up against his cheek while crying)
Promise me that you will make friends.....good friends you can depend on......
Promise me that you won't ever give up....I never did and neither did your mother...you have her smile
Never let the world take away that smile.....
(Luffy still crying but hearing his father speak)
Promise me Luffy....promise me you will always be kind to people and not harbor any hate
Hate turns to anger and then war....the fate of the world rests in your hands son
I wish I would have lived more to see you get married and have kids.....
(coughs more blood)
(In a weak tone)
Promise me that you will love your kids and protect them like I have done
I love you Luffy.....sorry I couldn't give you the life you derved....
(screams in pain and agony)
Fathhhhhhhheeeeeerrrrrrrr!!
Luffy sat there with his father now dead as the rain began to fall. Villagers came the next day and found the boy asleep there. They felt sad for the boy. The strong men were able to lift the boar enough to get the man out. They buried the father and they took the boy to tend to his wounds. It had been a sad day for all of them for they too had felt the pangs of loss and agony. Now that the beast was gone they could now begin to live in peace even though war raged outside their small borders.
Luffy awoke from his sleep a week later. He had been sick with fever and the doctor was unsure if the boy would live. But through a miracle he lived and seemed to be doing fine. As he got up he noticed he had bandages all over his body. It seemed like every bone in his body ached but he could walk. The nurses urged him to stay so he could recover. He agreed but on the condition they allow him to go to his father's grave. A young girl around his age accompanied him to a cliff that overlooked a vast field of lilies, his mother's favorite. As the sun began to set on the field it looked so warm and peaceful. Luffy kneeled down and placed his hand on the grave. He shed some tears and within himself he resolved his anger over his father's death. He smiled because he was happy that his father had gone to meet his mother. He spoke softly in whisper;
"At least now you don't have to drag me everywhere old man. I promise I'll be good so that one day we can all meet again and laugh. I miss you both....I won't let you down old man. I promise."
Luffy smiled and got up. He walked back towards town and did his best to recover. The following week, and at full health, Luffy headed off on his new journey with the blessing of the village. He felt it was time to head back to his real home. Konoha.
It wasn't easy getting back home. The war was still going on and Luffy had used up all his rations. He had then been robbed and left for dead along the cold, wet ground in Amegakure. He was hungry, badly bruised, and no place to call home. He traveled as far as he could, walking with old, muddy, and torn clothes. He didn't know how long he could survive or if he would even make it to Konoha. Hell he didn't even know if he would have a home if he even got there. Where would he stay and how would he live? Luffy forged on even though he felt weak. He walked past many fields of dead corpses as he felt the war getting worse and worse. He cried as he walked because there was so much despair and pain he felt. He really wished there was something he could do but what? He didn't know anything besides wielding a bow and arrow and even that had been stolen from him. He was all alone and for the first time in his life he felt that there was no point in living. The after several days of no food or rest, he felt like falling on the ground. He then came upon a wooded area and a road ahead. He walked up the road slowly and his sight was failing him. He fell to his knees as he saw a giant gate with a leaf symbol painted on it. He felt so happy that he had finally bloody made it. His sight got darker and darker and Luffy felt like sleeping. His vision turned black and he fell to the floor. He thought;
"I guess this is it....I at least made it to the gate father....Sorry I couldn't live long but...I feel so happy now...thanks for watching over me till now....".
With that Luffy was out cold. He didn't know but some villagers had seen him and picked him up. He was taken to the infirmary and was well taken care of until he woke up.
As he woke up the next day, Luffy sat up on the bed. He felt a headache and the rest of his body felt real sore like one does when one trains too hard. He grabbed his head and though he had never had a drink in his life he thought this is what it must feel to be hungover. As the pain subsided he got up, bandages and all, and looked outside the window. It was sunny and bright and the beautiful green trees could be seen moving with the soft breeze. Some children could be seen playing outside and laughing. They looked so happy and Luffy couldn't help but smile himself. And then with a surprised look he said
"Oh! Am I...in Konoha?"
He laughed and then he looked at the sun. He felt its rays touch his face and warm it up. He cried as he felt the warmth and whispered.
"I made it old man....I really made it.....our dream of coming home is done. We're finally home."
He opened his tearful eyes that had been so full of sorrow and pain and looked on with a bright cheery smile. He was home.
After recovering in the infirmary, a man helped him out by giving him an apartment. Though he was alone he finally had a place to call home. He was also nice enough to introduce Luffy into the academy. With a heart full of hope and an indomitable spirit, Luffy passed the academy in a year and the next year had been promoted to Chuunin Rank. He worked even harder than most of the shinobi in Konoha and had risen to the rank of Jounin. People really took a shine to Luffy not because of what he went through but for his effort and determination. He became a reliable leader and many came to regard him as a true hero of Konoha. His Will of Fire was so strong that many of those he watched over were inspired and went on to become noteworthy shinobi themselves. He trained real hard with legendary teachers like Kamishiro, Kaguya, Nathan and ReXii and in time he came into his own. He could be seen sitting down on the rooftop of his home looking at the sunset, always remembering the many lives he had touched and the village that had done so much for him. His fervor for Konoha was strong that he was willing to do anything for it...even give his life like the old man had done for him. He now understood his father's sacrifice and vowed to live a life of no regrets. He gave a big smile as tears rolled down his face. He had found the home of his dreams and friends for which to call his own.
"Konoha...my true home."
