"All of humanity, all nations, the entire world...they would know pain!"

Basic Information

Name: Six Paths of Pain
Nickname: God, Savior of this world, Yahiko and friends
Gender: Male (sometimes female too)
Age: ??????
Clan: N/A

> Appearance

The only common feature shared by these bodies is their Rinnegan and bright orange hair except the bald Asura path. Each Path has a number of body and facial piercings of various shapes, sizes, and patterns. All of them wear the Akatsuki uniform cloak and a scratched Amekagure headband. Their faces are totally expressionless and emotions unreadable.

> Personality

Pain's character can be described as calm, serious, aloof, and detached. He believes traumas he had experienced in his youth had enlightened him to the true meaning of pain and suffering, considers himself a deity, and believes he had evolved beyond a mere human being. He sought to show the world the meaning of pain by using an ultimate weapon to deter future wars, by means similar to "mutually assured destruction", and showed no moral qualms about his actions. He was willing to kill Jiraiya to ensure the completion of his plans. He even went so far as to proclaim himself a "god of peace", that had to guide the world to maturity through pain. Finally, he feels that no-one could understand true peace unless they understood "true" pain, something his childhood friend Yahiko believed.

Nonetheless, he is quite respectful, particularly to the fallen and the dead. Given the Akatsuki members' frequent bickering, he often quelled them and encouraged better relations among members. He even suggested that they mourn for Deidara after his passing, and reprimanded Kisame for calling Hidan and Kakuzu the "Zombie Combo". After his battle with Jiraiya, he held a moment of silence for his former teacher, out of respect for his power, and even told Zetsu to praise the latter. Because Konohagakure was partly responsible for the tragedies in his life, he held a great deal of animosity towards the village. Although Jiraiya's influence improved his opinion of the village during their time together, he eventually came to believe that Konoha profited from the tragedies of others and hated it and his former teacher.

> History

Nagato, under the alias of "Pain", devised a means to transfer his will into Yahiko's lifeless body and began a civil war within Amegakure that made him the new leader of the village. According to the stories among the villagers, Pain single-handedly killed Hanzō and systematically slaughtered every person he was ever in league, or affiliated with him; from family and servants, to even ambassadors of the villages Hanzō was associated with.

As the leader of the Akatsuki, Pain appeared frequently as a hologram to convene the Akatsuki members whenever a tailed beast needs to be sealed. As Part II progresses, portions of his face are shown before culminating in his full début alongside Konan.

Kazekage Rescue Arc

After Gaara was captured by Deidara and brought back to one of their secret hideouts, Nagato used the Deva Path to assemble the other members of the Akatsuki where they extracted and sealed the One-Tail.

Hidan and Kakuzu Arc

After Yugito Nii was captured by Hidan and Kakuzu, Nagato, using the Deva Path extracted the beast from its jinchūriki.

Itachi Pursuit Arc

Jiraiya, Pain's former master, enters the village through a frog. The moment Jiraiya fully releases himself from the frog, Pain feels a disturbance in the rain. Pain then orders Konan to search for the intruder, and stops the rain. As Konan transforms into many pieces of paper, and folds herself into butterfly-like figures, Pain switches from the Deva Path to the Animal Path. Pain then searches for Jiraiya as well. Jiraiya, now hidden inside of a body, heads more into Amegakure, and Konan catches him. Jiraiya comes out of the body, and begins to battle Konan. Konan ends up being covered in oil; unable to battle. Pain comes to Konan's rescue and cleans off the oil with foam with his Summoning Technique. Pain then summons a chameleon, and camouflages himself. Jiraiya sets off the Barrier: Canopy Method Formation, after summoning the "clumsy" toad: Gamaken. Pain summons again, but this time, a multi-headed dog.

Jiraiya has a very hard time fighting these as it would escape most of Gamaken's attacks, and somewhat regenerate. Jiraiya finishes off the dogs by trapping them in a toad's stomach and digesting them. Pain then summons a drill-beaked bird. The bird follows Jiraiya and makes many attempts to kill him, though fails and ends up getting burned. Pain then summons a rhino, though it quickly gets finished off by Gamaken. Pain then summons a giant ox, and manages to hit Jiraiya. The shield set off by Jiraiya self-destructs, sending the ox flying. Soon after defeating the ox, he completes his Sage Mode activation and summons Fukasaku and Shima. They both easily dispose of the chameleon, revealing the Animal Path. The Preta Path and the Human Path are both summoned, in order to face Jiraiya.

The Human Path attempts to kill Jiraiya, though it gets blinded by Jiraiya's kick to its head. Jiraiya then attempts to burn all three Paths with Sage Art: Goemon, though it gets absorbed by the Preta Path. Jiraiya then uses Ultra-Big Ball Rasengan, though it also gets absorbed. The Human Path attacks once again, and blinded, blocks Jiraiya's punch. The Animal Path gets distracted by a toad, and gets attacked by Jiraiya's Sage Art: Hair Needle Senbon. The Animal Path blocks the attack by summoning a giant panda. Jiraiya analyses their attacks, and escapes into the pipes. While in the pipes, he concludes that genjutsu will give him an opening against the Rinnegan. The Paths then followed Jiraiya, and while doing so, get caught in genjutsu. Jiraiya then kills the paths. As Jiraiya leaves, he lets his guard down. One of the Paths manages to sneak up behind him, and removes his arm. The other paths come together, including the ones that got killed (which were rejuvenated by the Naraka Path). Jiraiya manages to kill the Animal Path, though ends up being brutally killed. As Jiraiya sinks into the deep depths of the sea, Pain holds a moment of silence in respect for his former master.

Tsuchigumo Kinjutsu Arc

In the anime, after getting a replacement for the Animal Path, Pain is shown to have been assigned to capture the Six-Tails, which was sealed within Utakata, a missing-nin from Kirigakure. During his search, the Animal Path had his Giant Multi-Headed Dog scout the area, where it found and killed a group of Kirigakure hunter-nin led by Tsurugi. When Utakata later sought out Tsurugi and his men to turn himself in, he instead found Pain; Pain told Utakata that he would be needed to create his world, and informed the jinchūriki that he would be taking the Six-Tails. The Six Paths of Pain quickly captured him and then later extracted the beast.

Invasion of Pain Arc

With only the Nine-Tails and Eight-Tails remaining, Pain and Konan set out for Konoha after receiving orders from Tobi to capture the former. Eliminating the border guards upon their arrival, they infiltrated the village and dispersed, with each of the six Paths having a specific task: the Asura, Preta, and Animal Paths served as diversions, while the Deva, Human, and Naraka Paths and Konan in charge of reconnaissance. While exploring and laying waste to the village and its inhabitants, the Deva Path was confronted by Kakashi Hatake. The Asura Path came to its aid and together they overwhelmed Kakashi and his allies, but the Asura Path was destroyed.

Across the village, the remaining Paths continued their tasks, fighting whatever Konoha ninja they came across. The Deva Path met with Tsunade, the Fifth Hokage, who refused to reveal Naruto's location. Elsewhere, the Human Path used its unique interrogation technique on Shizune to learn that Naruto was at Mount Myōboku. Declaring that he would teach Tsunade the pain that Konoha had been so ignorant of, Nagato had the Deva Path use Shinra Tensei to obliterate the village while Konan and the other Paths withdrew.

As the smoke cleared, the Deva Path found that Naruto had returned with his toad allies. In retaliation for the village's destruction, Naruto swiftly crushed the newly-restored Asura Path and began his fight with the remaining Paths of Pain. The Animal Path called upon its summons to attack Naruto, who parried them with the aid of his toads and proceeded to defeat the Preta Path. Soon afterwards, Naruto eliminated the Human Path with his Wind Release: Rasenshuriken, and then teamed up with Gamabunta to defeat the Animal Path.

With four of the Paths gone, the temporarily powerless Deva Path protected the Naraka Path, which restored the Preta Path. The Preta Path absorbed a second Rasenshuriken, but it had only been a diversion to give Naruto an opportunity to finish off the Naraka Path. The Deva Path, its power returned, detained Naruto so that the Preta Path could capture him and absorbed his chakra to immobilise him. Doing so caused it to absorb senjutsu chakra, which had the side effect of turning it to stone. Naruto escaped its clutches, but was seized once again by the Deva Path, who pinned him to the ground with chakra disruption blades. The Deva Path lectured Naruto about the chain of hatred, pain, suffering, and war that the ninja system brought to the world, and how he planned to use the tailed beasts' power to achieve peace and end conflict. He asks if Naruto can think of a better solution, but Naruto does not respond.

Before the Deva Path could take Naruto away, Hinata Hyūga came to his defence. When she is apparently killed, Naruto became enraged and entered his six-tailed form, with which the Deva Path could not compete in its current condition. The Deva Path retreated to a location closer to Nagato, who had secluded himself nearby in order to control the Six Paths of Pain. This allowed the Deva Path to use Chibaku Tensei, trapping Naruto in a massive orb of earth and debris. This victory was short-lived, as Naruto soon progressed to an eight-tailed form and broke free of the Chibaku Tensei. Realising that he would have to make the sphere larger, it suddenly began to crumble and Naruto, reverting to his normal form, emerged from the ruins.

Abilities

General:

When the Paths are active together in battle, Pain is able to see through their eyes, thus registering six separate fields of vision at the same time. Essentially working as shared vision for the Paths, this allows Pain to coordinate their attacks and to provide defence for them without a blind spot. All of the Paths demonstrate incredible speed, strength and the ability to create Chakra Disruption Blades which are used to incapacitate opponents. The Paths are strongest when together, using combination tactics and the element of surprise to defeat their enemies; both Jiraiya and Kakashi fell victim to this technique. In the anime, it was shown that the Paths do not feel pain and have cold skin. With prior knowledge about the technique and each Paths' abilities, one stood a better chance of defeating them.

Deva Path:

The Deva Path grants the user the ability to manipulate attractive and repulsive forces. When used by Pain, the Deva Path was channeled into the body of his deceased friend, Yahiko. This Path grants the user the ability to manipulate attractive and repulsive gravitational forces of objects or people. These techniques, however, cannot be performed in rapid succession. The Deva Path also grants another ability: Chibaku Tensei which allows the user to create a huge makeshift terrestrial body from all the surrounding matter that is attracted to a black sphere released by this technique.

Asura Path:

The Asura Path grants the user the ability to summon mechanised armor, augmenting their body with extra limbs and various robotic weaponry When used by Pain, the Asura Path was channeled through the body of a ninja puppeteer. This ability grants the user mechanised weaponry and abilities. The user gains six arms and three faces, and had a folded, serrated blade-like sash around its waist. It could also protrude a similar set of flexible blades from one of its arms. It could fire one of its left forearms off as a long-range projectile, and could pull out his arms to reveal and fire a cluster of segmented missiles at its targets. It could quickly propel itself forward with a burst of chakra from its boots, and could protract multiple blades and drills from its right arm in combat. Also, it could open up the crown of its head to release a powerful chakra blast that was capable of destroying numerous buildings at once. Its physical raw power was enough to rip Jiraiya's arm off and crush his throat with basic taijutsu moves, as well as to throw the Animal Path all the way into Konohagakure from the outskirts of the village. All of these abilities befitted the "warring demon" name that the Asura Path held, whilst giving it a considerably higher degree of versatility than the other paths had (aside from the Deva Path). In addition to its immense offensive power, the Asura Path's body was incredibly resilient to damage. It survived the detonation of a Lightning Release Shadow Clone, a massive punch from Chōza Akimichi, and a direct hit from Kakashi's Lightning Cutter. When weakened but not completely disabled, the Asura Path was still dangerous. Kakashi noted that he did not have enough chakra or stamina to completely destroy its body and it wasn't until Naruto attacked it with a Rasengan while in Sage Mode that it was rendered totally incapacitated. Despite being used frequently to provide heavy firepower, the Asura Path was readily sacrificed to protect the even more powerful Deva Path, acting as a human shield against Kakashi's Lightning Cutter.

Human Path:

The Human Path grants the user the ability to remove the soul of any target they touched as well as read their mind. Pain channeled the powers of the Human Path through the corpse of a Takigakure shinobi. With this ability the user is able to read the minds of their target simply by placing their hand on the target's head, and could extract any information or secret being hidden by the victim against their will. However, using the technique will inevitably pull the soul out of the target's body, causing instant death.

Animal Path:

The Animal Path grants the user the ability to summon various creatures. When used by Pain, the Animal Path was first channeled into the corpse of a Fūma Clan shinobi and after it's destruction, a young woman. The Animal Path's main abilities revolved around summoning various animals and creatures to aid it in battle. Each creature served a different purpose in battle, much like every Path of Pain was also different from the others. Each animal summon also has the Rinnegan and as such Pain is able to see through their eyes as well. Each animal had various body piercings as well, suggesting that they too were under his control. Tactics wise, the Path's primary role in battle appeared to be overwhelming multiple opponents with its summons. In addition to that, both bodies used for this Path were of a smaller stature than the other five, which, coupled with Pain's tendency to use his Asura Path to throw the second Animal Path in order to reach far off locations and infiltrate Konoha, as well as Pain's decision to first confront Jiraiya with the first Animal Path body, suggests that it acted as both a scout, as well as a way for Pain to move around the battlefield quickly through summons. Worthy of note, the Animal Path requires no blood sacrifice or hand seals when summoning creatures, but uses hand seals to summon the other Paths. It can summon Konan as well. The second Path possessed some ability with taijutsu, able to clash with Naruto Uzumaki for a short time despite him being in Sage Mode.

Preta Path:

The Preta Path grants the user the ability to absorb an infinite amount of chakra in any form using the Blocking Technique Absorption Seal. Pain channeled the Preta Path through the corpse of a Kusagakure shinobi. This ability was primarily defensive in nature as it is capable of absorbing any ninjutsu-based technique, thereby nullifying its effect. This technique can also take the form of a barrier around the user's entire body, allowing them to absorb attacks from all directions. In addition to this the Preta Path is able to absorb chakra from an individual through physical contact.

Naraka Path:

The Naraka Path grants the user two main abilities: interrogation and restoration, by using the King of Hell. Pain channeled the power of the Naraka Path through body of a priest. The Naraka Path ability makes heavy use of the King of Hell. The King of Hell is a large head which sprouts out of the ground surrounded by purple flames. It also possesses the Rinnegan as well as the shared field of vision along with the other summons. The King of Hell could fulfil two purposes: interrogation and restoration. To interrogate, the Naraka Path need only catch hold of a person, causing the King of Hell to appear before them. With the victim seemingly paralysed, the Naraka Path begins questioning them. After answers are given, the King of Hell will unzip its mouth to release tendril-like arms and would draw out an apparition of the victim's life force energy in the form of an enlarged tongue.

The King of Hell would then proceed to pass its judgement. If the person was lying or refused to answer the questions, the King of Hell would remove their tongue and consume it, apparently killing them. However, if they told the truth, they would be spared, although left extremely exhausted. The second ability the Naraka Path possessed is the ability to repair any damage. To do so the Naraka Path has the King of Hell ingest the damaged body with its tendril-like arms into its mouth, then, after some time, the destroyed body will emerge from its mouth, completely rejuvenated. It did this for example to the Asura Path after it was destroyed by Chōji and Chōza Akimichi. Kabuto Yakushi stated that a Naraka Path user can transport bodies and souls through a given distance using the King of Hell.

I don't think Deva can have specialties as he is a Rinnegan user, and has a specialty in all the elements. Other than that, amazing.
