Basic Information

Looks: Gildarts is a tall and muscular man with shoulder-length reddish orange hair, which is kept slicked back, and some stubble around his mouth and on his chin. His heavily muscular body suffered many injuries due to his confrontation with a Black Dragon. His chest sports scars, two of which are stitched, and a black tattoo; the lower part of which is wrapped up in bandages, which also cross over his left shoulder, and his right forearm is bandaged too.
Gildarts’ attire is simple and practical, consisting of a dark, tattered cape over his bare chest, with a high collar and armored plates on the shoulders, held closed by a belt and usually covering his whole figure, and loose dark pants, complete with an armored waist-guard with plates similar to the ones on his shoulders, tucked inside simple boots.
Personality: Gildarts is an easy-going and laid-back person. He's also warm-hearted and kind, and has great interest and faith in the new generation of his old village's ninja. He is well respected by the whole village, with the citizens going as far as to literally rearrange its layout whenever he's around, creating a large, empty road for him to walk to his home, to prevent accidental damage. He also appears to be a bit absent-minded and oblivious, and apparently doesn't pay attention to what he's doing, such as not recognizing Mirajane. He also has a tendency to break through walls with his Bakuton in order to pass, rather than simply using the door, something which prompted the inhabitants of Magnolia to create the town's rearranging process.
When he enters a fight, he often points out that he is bad at and dislikes holding back, and Happy made it clear that Gildarts is well known for obliterating his opponents. When fighting, Gildarts would often employ exclusively hand-to-hand combat while using Bakuton to destroy things other than humans, such as the ground or jutsu, to avoid human casualties. Should he be pushed to the limit, or choose not to hold back, his power would break forth all at once. His fighting spirit is he respects his opponents, neither taking them too lightly nor overdoing. He also won't turn down a fight challenge offered to him, but he may ask to fight later after some urgent business is first dealt with.
In many ways, Gildarts appears to be somewhat of a lone wolf. He left the village to take on a 100-year mission by himself. He also left the village he was voted to be the new leader, passing on the mantle of leadership once again to Makarov, suggesting that he may feel uncomfortable with a leadership position, or at least disliking the added responsibility. In addition, during the fight between Bluenote Stinger and himself, he had his village mates leave the area so that he could fight Stinger one-on-one (although this was most likely done to keep the others alive, as they would have been caught in the fighting).

Background Info.
History: Gildarts was born the son of a captain of a squad in the prestigious Iwagakure Blast Corp. From the age of seven Gildarts was taught how to utilize the power behind his family’s Kekkei Genkai, Blast Release, and was a child prodigy in the art. On Gildarts' tenth birthday, he officially joined a chuunin squad of two other men; another young prodigy and their jonin sensei. His favorite phrase before ending a fight with his partner was "Crash and Burn!", in reference to his own and his friends abilities. Because of the pair's outstanding teamwork, and Gildarts' catchphrase, they were nicknamed "Crash" and "Burn".
One day, while on a mission, Gildarts and his partner were separated from their sensei. In the middle of an infiltration of the Hidden Sand, with enemies everywhere, the partners carefully moved about so as to not be detected. However, ANBU had been stalking the chuunin and attempted to assassinate the suspicious intruders. Burn was struck first with a kunai to the back, Gildarts throwing himself to the ground just as the kunai aimed for him cut off several locks of hair. He spun around to find three ANBU after him and his friend, and set his mind to the only option. Fight back.
To protect his partner, Gildarts made a great display of his Kekkei Genkai, drawing the attention of the entire village, including his lost sensei. But by the time Gildarts’ jonin leader arrived, the three ANBU lay in a heap before him and Burn had bled out from the kunai strike. Gildarts’ sensei calmed him from the adrenaline rush and took him back to Iwagakure, where the mission was explained to his father. Gildarts’ father was impressed so much, that at the end of the day, he offered Gildarts a position in his squad in the Blast Corp. But the fact that his friend’s life was overlooked and forgotten made Gildarts bitter towards Iwagakure, and caused him to run away from the village in the dead of the night.
Several years later, when Gildarts was 17 and had either trained himself or had been trained by hermits in various ninja arts, Gildarts found a small village being burned, and assumed it was under attack. Having been restless for days, Gildarts ran into the village and found the civilians under attack, and separated them from the attacking ninja. After displaying his power, from everything he learned over his seven years of traveling instead of Bakuton, the attackers retreated and the villagers asked Gildarts to stay with them and train a group of people to defend the small village Magnolia. Gildarts reluctantly agreed and after several years of living in Magnolia, Gildarts had trained a new generation of ninja to defend their home town. And while many of them were promising, he still didn’t feel as though he could safely leave the village and know they were in good hands.
One day, the citizens of Magnolia were enjoying the peace which came with the presence of the still-growing-in-power Gildarts, when a woman arrived. She was wearing an Iwagakure headband, and so the leader of Magnolia, Makarov, took her to Gildarts. Though at first he didn’t recognize her, when Mirajane explained how she knew him, Gildarts remembered the young woman he and his friend Burn had fought over so many times before. She explained that there was a band of missing-ninja headed to destroy small villages, and rumors of Gildarts’ location had her worried. When she had finished the story, Gildarts had no time to respond as the alarm was sounded; missing-ninja had infiltrated Magnolia and Gildarts’ students would soon be put to the test.
Gildarts ran out of the building where he and Mirajane were talking, and instantly blew off the head of a passing man garbed in black. He then took off to organize several dumbstruck ninja, and placed his competent students in charge of sections of the village. He himself then moved around to destroy several of the missing-ninja on his own, when the band’s leader appeared to Gildarts holding the head of one of his most promising students. Enraged, Gildarts blew up the ground between the two of them with his Bakuton. But the smoke created allowed the man to dodge the attack and escape behind Gildarts, where he was struck with a sword.
“Fear me, Magnolia,” the man said. “I, the Black Dragon, have struck down your great leader Gildarts! Surrender, and the rest of you may be spared the pain he fe-!” Before the man finished his statement, Gildarts had grabbed his throat and threw the man to the ground. “F*** you, ‘Black Dragon’!” The man licked the blood from the corner of his mouth and sprang to his feet, attempting to strike Gildarts again. Gildarts danced with the Black Dragon for several hours, and long after the Black Dragon’s army was either completely dead or had fled, the whole time telling villagers of Magnolia to stay away from his fight. At the end of brawl, Gildarts grabbed the man’s neck, having separated him from his sword, and glared at him with blood spilling from his mouth.
“Who are you? Why have you come here!?” he asked. “My name- ack!” Gildarts began crushing the man’s throat, tired of his charade. “I want a real name this time.” “I’m Bluenote… Bluenote Stinger, happy!? And I came simply to destroy everything you cared about, KID!” Bluenote’s last word sprayed blood over Gildarts’ face, and so Gildarts blew the man’s head off with his potent Bakuton chakra.
After his fight with Bluenote Stinger, the Black Dragon, the villagers of Magnolia tried to give Gildarts the position of village leader, and he refused on three separate occasions, claiming he wouldn’t do well in a leadership role. When asked the fourth time, by Makarov himself, Gildarts said he would think about it, and then excused himself to sleep. When his house was inspected the next morning, all that was found was a note stating that Gildarts had left the village, and that it was in the capable hands of Makarov. Before leaving, Gildarts took one last look at the small village he had spent 13 years of his life in, and then took off away from the home he fought so hard to protect. From there, Gildarts made his way to the other end of the Five Great Nations to Kirigakure, where he asked for an audience with the Mizukage to explain his situation and ask if he could join the Hidden Mist. After hearing the stories of the 30 year old man, the Mizukage accepted Gildarts to his village, where he has been living for the past 15 years.

Gildarts has grown up with an affinity for Doton, and has the capability to perform Doton jutsu with only a single handseal.
