Chapter 10 – Covet
“Maybe he’s in the same state Strange is in!” Rogue says, her voice echoing through the sewers.
“He isn’t and I know that for a fact! He is stronger than you think!” Naruto says.
“Keep quite you two. If they are down here then we are completely doomed. Look at what state we are in for peak sakes.” Charles says hovering to Peter who lays still on the ground. Charles closes his eyes beginning to concentrate on Peter who levitates into the air. Peter opens his eyes gasping for air as he hits the ground and curls in pain.
“Spidey!...”
“I’m okay, and go ahead and call me Peter now. Not much use calling me anything else given the state we are in. Aunt May… Mary Jane… Oh God Fury’s emergency list did he…”
“He sent out troops Peter. Your loved ones should be safe.” Charles says.
“But we don’t know that for sure.” Peter says standing to his feet.
“Thanks for getting me out of there Naruto. No telling what Apocalypse could have did to me.”
“No sweat. I just hope there’s still time to save those who weren’t as lucky.”
“We should be out there saving more people!” Rogue yells.
“And get ourselves killed? We need to link up with the others to even have a chance.” Hashirama says.
“I should have done more…. I should have gotten stronger as well!” Peter says falling to his knees.
“What was it all for… A waste of ****ing time is what it was.”
“No need to curse yourself. Avenge. Now stand to your feet and whip off yourself. We need to find a way to get to the underground X chambers. There will be food and shelter.”
“Okay then what? Just sit there and let Apocalypse have his way with the world until Doom arrives and makes things even worse?” Naruto asks.
“No. We will wait until we gain contact with the others we don’t know how long that will take so our best bet is to wait where no one will find us correct?”
“He’s got a point. Let’s stick with this plan Naruto.” Hashirama says.
“This is complete bullshit…. Do you not know how many X-Men are out there!? They could be prisoners tortured to do his bidding for all we know!”
“Rogue I understand your pleadings but we must think about stopping Apocalypse together! Being separate will not prove to change a thing!” Charles says.
“We… we have to do something…” Rogue says as she begins to walk through the sewer.
“Follow her lead.” Charles says as the small group begins to follow.
“This has been a nightmare. All of that training and we haven’t done anything but get more people killed.” Hashirama says.
“I should have trained you all more. We could have stayed longer I… I’m going to take you all back…. This will not be the end of us. I will make certain of it.”
“You say that like you can just walk back into the Negative Zone anytime you want. You better hope Apocalypse hasn’t destroyed the damn mansion.” Rogue says.
“Why are you being such a damn snob? We’re trying to stop Apocalypse and all you want to do is contradict us with your yelling!” Peter says.
“Do you not know that without Tony’s location we can’t even access the machine?” Rogue says. Peter stops and looks down as he tears off his mask.
“I’m going up.” Peter says.
“Don’t do this Peter… Your Aunt wouldn’t want you to be carrying such a burden…”
“You don’t know what my Aunt wants!” Peter yells his face turning red hot as he emits cosmic energy.
“Simmer down before they sense us!” Hashirama says. Peter calms down and begins to walk up a ladder followed by Naruto and Rogue.
“Naruto what are you doing!?”
“I have to back him up First! I promise we won’t get ourselves killed!” Naruto says as they close the sewer lid.
“Oh my God…” Rogue says as she kneels next to an unconscious Natasha who is covered in blood.
“She… she left the tunnels after she got a message from Stark… We told her not to leave until the bombings died down…”
“Bombings!?” Peter asks.
“Yes… last night there were bombings nearby but… Natasha insisted we leave to see Stark as soon as possible.... For a super-agent she wasn't thinking so clearly…” Rogue says. Tears begin to fall from Natasha’s cheeks as Naruto kneels next to her putting his hand on her bloody chest.
“I’m not letting you go.” Naruto says as Natasha is hit with a burst of cosmic energy that closes up the hole in her stomach. She bolts up beginning to cough as she looks over at Naruto gracefully.
“Thank you… I… shouldn’t have left that night I… I had to get to Stark as soon as possible.”
“I understand. Just ask for a traveling buddy next time! I’d be happy to join!” Naruto says giving a thumbs up. Natasha smiles as Naruto helps her to her feet.
“It’s not like you to be so hasty Natasha.” Peter says.
“Yea… and it’s not like you to not give a shit about your identity.” Natasha says.
“Hah funny but…” Peter looks over to his right as green lights begin to shimmer against the ground.
“Dammit! There’s no way in hell we are getting out of here!” Rogue says.
“Let’s just go onto the roof tops!” Naruto says.
“And let that ship see us in seconds!? I don’t think so! Back in the sewers hurry!” Peter says as they all begin rushing back into the dark tunnels.
“Back so soon?” Charles says as Rogue lays Natasha down on top of a sleeping bag. Peter begins to look around at the tents and food and back at the location he was sleeping seeing bloody towels around his pallet.
“Were did… How did you all come across all this in the sewers?” He asks.
“Naruto and I made trips to the top to get a few things. Hard to get around once the Doombots start patrolling but once you get past them it’s a free Wal-Store everywhere ha!” Hashirama says.
“Okay first it’s Wal-Mart and second… just how long have I been sleep?…” Peter asks.
“You’ve been unconscious for nearly a month Peter.” Charles says hovering in front of him.
“I know this is a lot to process…”
“So it’s that bad huh?” Peter says sitting down on a lawn chair.
“A whole month with no word from anyone… That could only mean one thing…”
“Don’t think of it that way. They sent us a message a month ago stating for us to seek shelter and that’s probably where they are at the moment. In the same position we are in.” Natasha says.
“Yea… So how bad has it been getting exactly?” Peter asks.
“Doombots are now on every inch of every street. They roam through the sewers now and then but we catch them before they catch us. But sooner or later there are gonna be as much down here as there are up there and when that day comes we are done. Apocalypse is most likely suspicious of certain bots going missing but I have no idea whether they are keeping logs on every single one of the damn things.” Charles says.
“Most likely not there are thousands of them.” Peter says.
“Don’t underestimate those things Peter. They are smarter than you think… the things I have seen them do to humans above… It’s something I will have to see every time I lay awake at night. Peter what I need you to do is be patient with us. I know that is gonna be a hard thing to do but for now… it’s all we can do.” Charles says. Peter shakes his head and crawls into a sleeping bag as Naruto lays on top of his own sleeping bag with a leaf village symbol sharpied on top.
“I know how it is to see your village destroyed by villains. It’s a hard thing to see. But if we are strong enough. As I was to those villains then. We may be able to take back what’s ours.” Naruto then closes his eyes begging to dream of the village. He sees himself saying goodbye to the avengers who walk back through the portal. Peter stays behind saying goodbye last but before he enters the portal he stops looking down at the ground and balling his fists as an aura grows around him.
Naruto is awoken by a vibration coming from his pocket. He pulls out his Avengers card and whispers his passcode to find a short message under the name Iron Man.
“Everyone wake up! We’ve got a message from Tony!” Naruto yells as Natasha pulls out her card and begins to read his message aloud.
“There is a lot that has happened over the past month… The ones who have fallen getting me here are Ant-Man, Wasp and The Falcon. All who fought hard for us to make it to the underground tunnels of the Statue of Liberty? If there is anyone out there that is still with us please make your way to our location using the guide shown.” Natasha looks up and begins to pack food inside of a backpack.
“Wait a second this doesn’t add up. What if Apocalypse has a hold of one of these things? He could know our location.” Rouge says.
“They only work when you say the phrases that turn it on. If they are not holding the device and the facial recognition does not pass Tony’s requirements. You’re not getting in. I’m pretty sure Tony can access the microphones of each one of these things as well. He wouldn’t send out this message if he didn’t know for sure that his technology was up to par.” Natasha says.
“This still seems risky as hell. How will we even reach the damn thing?” Peter asks.
“We’ll have to leave the sewers and travel by water. It’s the only way.” Natasha says.
“I don’t think anyone here has the ability to breath underwater so…”
“Actually we all do.” Peter says interrupting Rogue who scowls.
“Now isn’t the time for jokes Peter!” Rogue says as Peter touches her arm making a purple cosmic cloak around her.
“With this we will make it there in no time. Naruto you will have to ride with Charles in one of your TSB shields.”
“Finally we are back in action.” Charles says grinning.
“Everyone got there earpieces on the private channel?” Natasha asks. Everyone nods as they check their channels and put there buds back into their ears.
“Alright then let’s move out!”
The group hovers from the sewers quietly as Peter floats in the air closing the lid telepathically. They all begin to move swiftly through the ally making their way to a small park. They rush through the trees to find a small army of Doombots patrolling the streets with a man riding a gigantic horse with black flames blazing from its skin, leading the group.
“Who is that on the horse? Anyone got a visual?” Rogue asks.
“I think it may be… No it couldn’t be he said he was done with his voyages years ago…” Peter says.
“Regardless of who it is we know we shouldn’t get near him or we’ll be done for.” Hashirama says.
“There are other horsemen. Three more to be exact.” Charles says.
“Three more!? How are you so sure!?” Naruto says.
“We’ve faced Apocalypse before. He has always had four horsemen by his side.” Rogue says.
“Don’t you all have a prison far away to send all of these powerful mutants once you beat them? This is beginning to get ridiculous how many times you all face your foes and pay the price every time.” Hashirama says.
“You’re one to talk being that your world has been waging war between its villages for as long as anyone can remember.” Rogue says smirking at Hashirama who scowls.
“How in the hell do you??.... No matter. You’re telling the truth anyhow.”
“Looks like they’re still collecting civilians… carrying them around and glass cages as they look around for more… Savages!” Natasha says as she begins to move forward. They continue on their path through the trees finally reaching a bay. They look across the waters below to see the Statue of Liberty broken in half. The top half lays against the shallow waters as the top gives out a smoky cloud that stretches into the skies.
“Like I said before. It can be rebuilt Natasha.” Naruto says. Natasha nods her head and jumps down onto the wooden walkways below.
“Let’s do this.” Natasha says as Peter creates a cosmic cloak around her, Rogue and himself. They jump into the water followed by Charles and Naruto who are inside a large Truth Seeking Ball.
“This message was sent two days ago by the way.” Natasha says swimming through the waters.
“What’s that supposed to mean? You think they won’t be there?” Rogue says.
“I didn’t say that… I just expect there to be people who received the message just as late as we have. Some who still haven’t gotten it.”
“Most likely. All we can do it pray they make it through these tragic times.” Charles says.
“Apocalypse isn’t going to be stopped by a few prayers professor.” Rogue says.
“What did I teach you about talk like that Rogue? It does no good for moral. And what good will negative moral do against Apocalypse?” Charles asks.
“No good at all professor…” Rogue says.
“How long has there been a secret passage here Natasha?” Peter asks.
“No clue. Was only shown how to enter it.”
“I’d think Tony would tell you more. How long have you been an Avenger again?” Naruto asks.
“Longer than you have so I know enough about other secret hideouts that would make this one look as if it has neon arrows pointed at its location.”
“Meaning?”
“I know some super-secret locations Naruto.”
“Ohhhh Okay. I don’t understand your jokes sometimes.” Naruto says making Natasha laugh.
“Here we are laughing while others are out there screaming.” Rogue whispers to herself.
“You know Rouge. Instead of being so negative how about you think about the future of this team. Imagine what good we can accomplish together after this.” Charles says.
“Why talk as if you’re for sure we will make it out of this. There’s no need. We both know there might not be an X-Men left after this.”
“Rogue that’s enough!” Charles says making Rogue tear up and t out her ear bud.
“So much tension sheesh…” Naruto says rubbing his finger underneath his nose.
“It’s not like her to be so negative about these situations. The stakes have probably risen so high… she can’t see anything other than the pain that reflects.” Charles says.
“Once we get to the Statue she’ll see Charles. She’ll see that there’s still hope.” Peter says as they rise to the top of the water and onto the wooden bay of the island.
“We actually made it.” Natasha says leading them towards the back of the monument.
“Thought the ships beams would have caught us by now. What could possibly be making them ignore us?” Charles says.
“It’s most likely the cosmic energy. Can’t be read unless the reader has cosmic energy of their own.” Peter says.
“Apocalypse has that.” Naruto says.
“Then why hasn’t he read us by now?” Charles asks.
“Wait a second… We injured him during the battle as well… Has anyone actually seen Apocalypse this past month?” Peter asks.
“No, only the Doombots and a few of their scanning crafts that linger through the buildings.” Natasha says.
“So Apocalypse must be healing as well… though he can’t be taking that long to heal. He’s stronger than we are.” Peter says.
“I mean we did give him a pretty good fight. But what do I know. A fight at that magnitude is something I had only dreamed of as a kid ha!” Hashirama says.
“Enough speculating for now. Let’s see who all has survived…” Natasha says putting her hand on the teal brick wall. The wall slides to the side and they all walk into the elevator.
“An elevator? Geez why do you guys have so many of these?” Naruto asks.
“Because we don’t wanna take stairs?” Rogue says sarcastically.
“I would love to take stairs! It’s a good exercise!” Naruto says.
“You’re so hyperactive it’s scary. You’re like the characters from those Japanese comics.” Rogue says as the elevator doors stop and the door slowly opens. Tony Stark stands in front of them, his silver armor shining bright as if they had finally reached a place of true hope.
“Words can’t explain how happy I am to see your faces.” Tony says as they all step from the elevator.
“You’re… you’re actually here…” Rogue says in disbelief.
“Yes, it was a hard battle between us and Doombots whom we could not keep off our trails, but now it’s just us.” Tony says as he turns showing many of The Avengers X coming from their rooms.
“Me, Bruce, Ms. Marvel, The Fantastic 4 who are in space at the moment, Vision, Thor, Nova, Storm, Wolverine, Beast, Colossus, Iceman, Emma, Cyclops, InoShikaCho, Hinata, Kakashi, Sakura, Tsunade, Tobirama, Minato, Gaara, and Hiruzen. The rest are either captured, deceased, or still in hiding.” Tony says as he sits down on a cement block.
“This… this is remarkable… So many of us are here. We will give Apocalypse everything we’ve got.” Charles says.
“Not exactly Charles.” Tony says.
“You’re crazy if you think we can just walk back out there and face him.” Cyclops says.
“We have injured people down here, both physically and mentally.” Tobirama says.
“You were the main one who wanted to take down the s-o-b and now you want to just stay down here and hide?” Rogue says.
“We are no use to our planets if we’re dead.” Minato says.
“Well… there is a plan I’ve been thinking of…” A deep voice says, as Nick Fury comes from his room.
“Though I think Peter could have been thinking the same.”
“Oh yea? And what is this idea exactly? By the way we also have Fury. Nick Fury everyone.” Tony says smiling.
“Training the ninja even more. Giving them more cosmic energy.” Nick says.
“This has to be some sort of joke! MY sister is still out there as we speak we are not spending another second in that wasteland! We will be there for longer this time I’m guessing!?” Gaara says.
“Yes you might have to and it will be for the sakes of not only your sister Gaara but for the sakes of billions of others.” Nick says.
“The hell are you thinking Nick? I know you don’t think he hasn’t destroyed the mansion. Even if the portal is underground I doubt we can get to the damn thing.” Logan says.
“We made it here didn’t we?” Rogue asks.
“She has a point. If they could do the same thing Charles group did to make it here. We might actually beat Apocalypse next go around.” Beast says.
“Guys…” Peter says.
“Exactly Beast. This plan is the best one we’ve had yet. WE just need to all be on the same page here.” Nick says.
“Hey everyone.” Peter says taking a step forward.
“I am refusing to go until we find where my sister is located. I know damn well you have the technology to figure it out Stark.” Gaara says.
“Yea I do but do you really think I need to be having my feeds noseying around that ship!? What makes you think they don’t have similar technology that finds that feed and tracks us down?” Tony asks.
“Listen!” Peter yells making everyone turn to him.
“There are horsemen out there. Each of them are most likely an Omega level threat. And one of them… I think I know who he is.” Peter says. Charles hovers to Peter and looks up at him frowning.
“You are correct in your findings Peter. It was him. But until we figure out why he was there. Let’s not go around telling everyone of him.” Charles says.
“Wait a second Professor this could be very important information. You can’t just hold this information form us!” Nick says.
“I can if it deals with the laws of time.” Charles says.
“If that’s the case… it’d be best to leave the conversation for another time. For now we need to be sending the ninja off to the mansion.” Tony says.
“About that… only me and Naruto should be the ones going to the Zone at the moment.” Peter says.
“What!? You expect us to just sit by and keep going with what power we have!? We aren’t strong enough Peter!” Minato says.
“I know, but we need people here to take on Apocalypse. Not just a few. Only a few days will past at the most so don’t panic. If we don’t make it back then… you know what has happened.” Peter says.
“Hopefully this won’t happen. Because while you are away at the Zone…. We will be charging up for our counterattack against the ship.” Tony says.
“That things shield is about as tough as my skin, are you insane?” Emma asks chuckling.
“No he is not… we’ve been talking with the Fantastic 4 and their cosmic missile aboard their ship will break not only the shield t most likely the entire ship itself.” Nick says.
“You ****ing idiots! There are captives on that ship!” Ino yells.
“Quite! You don’t think we know that!? This plan is only an alternative!” Tsunade says.
“But an alternative like this its… it’s cruel.... My sister could be on that ship…” Gaara says as sand begins to crackle with lightning around him.
“I told you they would go along with that one…” Beast says.
“Hell I don’t even want to go along with it… But I understand it… And I’m guessing Plan C is the time traveling plan.” Logan says.
“Correct…” Tony says.
“Time travel is Plan C!? That should be Plan ****ing A! SO we don’t have to go through this shit Stark!” Rogue says.
“Time travel is a serious matter. Time should not be toyed with under no circumstances. That is why it is last on their list Rogue.” Iceman says.
“That and the fact that if we go back in time. Who’s to say we will even defeat him that go around. And next time he will know for a fact we will return to kill him again so if we fail to stop him what does he do?” Tony asks.
“He kills us then and there. Regardless of Dooms orders.” Shikamaru says.
“So that’s it. We put all our cards on those two until we have to resort to two horrible backups. Awesome.” Cyclops says going back into his room and slamming the door behind him.
“Family’s together again!” Rogue says.
“We’ll take Hinata and Sakura with us. They are the ones with the least amount of cosmic energy at the moment they wouldn’t last a second against Apocalypse if they stayed.” Peter says.
“The others won’t see that as fair.” Naruto says.
“Well I’ll deal with it. It is my fault for not teaching them more. They could have probably made a huge difference if…”
“Don’t beat yourself up about it Spidey. Apocalypse was too strong. Next time we got him okay?” Naruto says.
“Dammit Peter I don’t even know what to say. I’m glad you all made it.” Nick says.
“I was unconscious for most of the time.” Peter says.
“Battle against Apocalypse must’ve took a lot out of ya… Look I just wanted to say that Plan B involves us also shooting a missile at Apocalypse himself. Now our readings say he’s been in the same position since about a month ago. So he must be resting up for something.”
“Or he could be injured…”
“We can’t just fight him on a whim Peter. There has to be complete evidence of this and if he is only in slumber… and we awake him… we’re done.”
“Wait how powerful is this missile exactly!?” Naruto asks.
“Powerful enough to shed Apocalypses skin. Reed has conjured up the energy from Thanos the mad titan’s energy using that to power these babies. They emit so much radiation they need their own plasma shields.” Nick says.
“Jeez… All those science words must mean it’s the real deal huh?” Naruto says.
“Yea well I’m not too good at goodbyes so… All have to say is that I want you to at your strongest the next time I see you. No more playing round with this fella.” Nick says walking away as Kakashi, Sakura and Hinata approach him.
“N… Naruto… Train hard so we can get outta here alright?” Hinata says.
“Listen Hinata. Sakura. You two are coming with us.” Naruto says.
“What!? Why is that?” Kakashi asks.
“Sakura and Hinata are the weakest of the ninja here. The amount of cosmic energy they possess will do nothing against Apocalypse except get them killed…. No offense…” Peter says.
“Well… it does make sense… but the others aren’t going to like the fact you are only bringing them.” Kakashi says.
“Well they’ll have to deal with it.” Peter says as Kakashi nods and walks away pulling out his book.
“Really this is for you Hinata… I understand you like Naruto so… Just hurry and get together before someone else steps in okay?” Peter whispers to Hinata who begins to blush.
“Someone else?” Hinata says.
“Peter before you go I just want you to know that… Steve is here as well.” Tony says.
“Steve’s here!? Where at!?” Peter asks.
“He’s… he’s in the healing chambers… I don’t know if he’s going to make it or not, I just… I just wanted you to know before you all went out.” Tony says.
“You weren’t going to tell us were you?” Naruto asks.
“No, the lack of moral hasn't been very prominent around her lately. The last thing I want is more of it. Now you two take care. When you return be ready to tear that son of a ***** alive.” Tony says as he walks away leaving Naruto and Peter who look up the stairs in anticipation.
“Naruto. I was raised by my Aunt May and Uncle Ben. My parents died is why… well you’ve heard all of this. What I’m trying to say is that I was never given a brother. That’s only thing God hasn’t given me in this world was a partner to face life with. Before we walk through this door and face hell I need you to understand. You’re my brother Naruto.” Peter says holding out his fist. Naruto grins and pounds his fist against Peters as a TSB shield is created around the group.
“I was alone in the beginning. Though I was given a brother. He was taken away from me by the devil. But I’m glad he gave me another. Let’s go get stronger…. And then…. Let’s kill this *******!”
Thanks for reading! Alot of talking going on this chapter mostly because of the fact that there is so much fighting going on later that it all just need to be consistent lol. (IMO) Have chapters 11 to 20 already brainstormed on Word app so yea this is gonna be an awesome journey! Hope you stick around!
