I would disagree with the first part. After Nagato's death recall Obito saying that was meant to be used on me/for me. This is also during his Madara masquerade. As such, up until Nagato's death, reviving Madara was the game plan. However with bis death, the plan had to be altered and Obito planned everything out in that fashion. Which is why Madara's return is a bother. Not only is it someone Obito doesn't entirely enjoy, but also his efforts are once again altered.
Madara did not plan to be Edo'd, but instead revived by Nagato....as that was the plan. However, the plan changed upon Nagato's death.
With the flashback or Obito's past, I'd say villain status was being passed to Madara. It showed that Obito's dark parallel was all his doing. Also, Madara better ties into the cycle of hatred and the Senju-Uchiha rivalry that Sasuke and Naruto represent than Obito.
While it didn't go according to plan (Nagato reviving), instead Obito made steps to do this himself, and then Madara was brought back. Obito realised the issue because he'd need to use Rinne Tensei to make the originals plan work. The problem is that he'd die and the dream world wouldn't work for him. As such he had never planned to work for Madara after Nagato died.
