I see what your saying, and I looked through a couple of chapters, I couldn't really find him in any before that that would close in time, I could of sworn he had one the last time we saw him before that, or maybe he had one in the anime at the time that scan happens? I'm not even sure I could just be trippin lol but as far as the them falling thing, he analyzed by seeing what happened when you cut them, iirc the tree grabs them back up pretty quick when they're cut
