No you can't do either without it activated, the "exception" i was referring too was activating the absorbing ability at basically the same time as you activate karma, you need karma the mode activated to use the abilities.

You can't use either at the exact same time but yes in quick succession you can, it works the same as activating any mode then using a technique right after.

No you can't use the absorbing ability at the same time as the rift, the absorbing can't be done at the same time as anything other than maybe taijutsu, depending on body positioning. Consider it the same as any ninjutsu in that sense.
