It turned out to be very similar to Kishimoto's logic. Naruto in Sage's mode has damn powerful taijutsu moves, Sasuke using the Heaven Cursed Mark at its maximum potential has damn powerful ninjutsu moves... So it's pretty plausible the third Sannin student have a powerup in the Genjutsu's path...
