i know it would be a bit of work, but a suggestion would be to dm people or find a way to have people's characters involved in the NW whether through personal connections (make up relatives, businesses, canonical events), established lore (canon events) or some kind of actual reason they're involved in the story.

I wasnt a real fan of 'this ninja world has events going on and you can be involved if you want'. Because it kinda just felt like it didnt matter what you did, there was no personal stake
I actually like this idea. I'll discuss this with LoK and see what we can do with it.

I like this idea. I think it should be optional but yeah. Having people's characters be worth something of note. I always want connections and history and family and shit but there isn't much of an opening for that in practice. Only if both/allow parties make it up and decide to just go with it in our history. But having all the businesses and relatives and shit would be cool.

My characters be wanting family and shit... I had to make my other bios my own family cuz everyone else sucks.

When ever I'm DMing for people IRL playing D&D, during character creation, I usually ask people to come up with 3 different people. A close relative/friend, a confidant or information source, and usually a rival/enemy.
The close relative gives them someone to interact with or protect and reason to keep that person alive.
The confidant gives them a way to ask for information or a way to get involved in the story (eg think about asking for rumours and studf)
And a rival or enemy gives them something to target or be involved in the plot, whether it's joined the rival gang, cult, or even just trying to out do them saving more lives or what ever.

Edit: I'm not saying NW mod or story has to have that huge level of detail, but actually having your own character involved in the NW story through NPCs is a good hook rather than "the world/your village is in danger. Go stop it."

That's dope as ****. And smart. I thought about creating a little NPC family. It would be so cute.

Obviously with a smaller group of 4 or 5 people it's easier to manager or plan, but when it's 10 or more people here on the forum, I can imagine it's more difficult. So I just look forward to seeing what's gonna happen and how we can be involved
