[Question] Sending positive reputations?

One of my fellow members on here was kind enough to respond to a signature request by making me one, and I wanted to rep him as a token as my thanks. I clicked the star on the post. He PM'd me asking why I sent a negitive rep? Can someone please explain this and tell me what I did wrong? If i add to their rep, I want to do it in a positive way. Thanks.
