Supposedly, Hashirama wanted new generations in Konoha to surpass the previous.. It has happen here a clear example.

First Generation
Hashirama was surpassed by Tobirama..
>>Hashirama was believed to be the strongest Ninja ever, but Tobirama was a more complete ninja than Hashi.. there is no one stronger than Hashi when it comes to either Taijutsu and Ninjutsu, but Tobirama had more genjutsu and sensory abilities, it's believed that he created edo tensei and was able to match the the strenght of the Silver Gold brothers by himself he also developed the teacher-student system and died admirably protecting the future generations..
Tobirama was surpassed by Danzo/Hiruzen

Hiruzen matched Tobirama's Ninjutsu, when it comes to sealing or summoning Hiruzen surpased Tobirama, the manga hasn't show tobirama's sealing/summoning techniques, so for now Hiruzen was better.. Danzo Surpassed Tobiramas Genjutsu and Taijutsu, Taking Shisui's eye giving him the strongest genjutsu there is (until/if infitite tsukyomi shows up) Danzo becam a half copy of Hashi taijutsu wich surpassed Tobirama's also being able to use izanigi many times problably made him imortal
Hiruzen/Danzo were surpassed by Jiraya/Orochimaru
>> Jiraya matched Danzo taijutsu with Sennien Modo, Orochimaru's genjutsu is not as strong as Danzo's but Danzo's had a limit and it needed a lot of time to have Shisui's eye to restart.. Orochimaru could use his genjutsu ablity as many times as he wanted.. Both jiraya and Orochimaru surpassed Hiruzen Summoning jutsu and ninjutsu as well.. Jiraya was able to master multiply natures and forms, Orochimaru was able to learn many jutsus, including developing EDO Tensie..
Jiraya was surpassed by Minato

Minato had the Flying Rajin technique which made him the fastest ninja ever. he created high pitch chakra rotation, creating a new form rasengan, minato's intelligence and reaction was at another level. he was able to act and think fast in difficult situations ex) his fight with Tobi where he figured out how attack him and retrieve the Kyubi from him.. in sealing he learned many Uzumaki jutsus like the tetagram sealing technique he used to seal the Kyubi in naruto..
Minato was surpassed by Kakashi and Obito
>> especially Obito, he surpassed minato in Summoning, Taijutsu, Genjutsu and matched his speed, with the help of Madara he got himself a copy of hashirama's body, and one rinnengan, in his painful experiences he got his Mangekyo ability dimenison traveling.. making himself untouchable for about 5min and teleport to any place he wants.. Obito can now summon the gedo mazo and somehow control half of the Juubi's mind.. Kakashi might surpassed Minato Ninjutsu and matched his speed, Kakashi can create more than 1000 jutsus and struggles to do the dimension traveling that somehow matches Minato's speed..
Obito and Kakashi were surpassed by Naruto and Sasuke..

Sasuke genjutsu ablities are at the leve of Itachi and Shisui, surpassing both Obito ( until infinite tsukyomi) and Kakashi.. Naruto has surpassed Obito's Speed and Ninjutsu and sensory abilities, and matched his summoning and taijutsu abilities, with sennien modo Naruto surpasses kakashi and matches obito taijutsu.. with kyubi mode he has surpassed obito's and kakashi ninjutsu controling the power of kuybi.. the Bijuu mode matches Obito's gedo Mazo..
So in short words new generations have surpassed older generations any toughts?? Comments??
