Well to be honest he didn't really understand the importance of family and friends especially during missions till the incident with Obito so he was ashamed that his father saved his companions instead of the success of the mission; plus I bet he's drop dead gorgeous and doesn't want to get harassed by crazy fan girls! Kakashi's sharingan is always activated, and since hes not an uchiha, it takes more of a toll on him than if he had uchiha blood. He uses his forehead protector to cover it up when hes not using it so he doesnt waste any chakra. But why does he have a mask that covers his nose and mouth? I believe its just a ninja thing, theirs tons of people in the manga who use face covers, and masks.

I think I read in an interview of Kishi that the mask is simply part of his character design, but it has made him to draw emotions out of Kakashi through his face. I don't think he was that ashamed as to hide himself, even up until now when he met his father in the afterlife.

See who's talking about reading the manga. Give me the proof that he wore mask before his father died. The truth is there is no proof.
And as for the theory, its an opinion. I am not kishi who knows the reason. Its just one of my thoughts. So, people chill.

The only reason why Hatake Kakashi keeps wearing the mask is to hide his malformation due to not controlling the dog sage mode properly. His father the white fang was renown for being equivalent in talent to a sannin hence his power to have a pact with dogs. During times of war, the white fang felt probably the need to initiate his son early to the power of the sage mode, or did Kakashi sneak on him and train behind his back.
In any case, things went bad for Kakashi when he couldn't control the sage mode and transformed part of his face into that of a dog. The reason why the dogs all remember him differently is that, being of different breeds each conceives his looks based on his point of view.
The white fang could enter the Sage mode, hence his name the white fang.

Kishi wanted everyone to wear masks originally, since that is what most real ninja did back in the ninja era of Japan. He changed it though, but I guess he left Kakashi alone since he was probably one of the first characters he created.
