In the manga. Kimimaro fought Naruto then Lee then Gaara. His illness killed him in the end.

lots of people fought naruto, gaara and lee. does that mean they could of been ultimalty strong?

Lee, he was almost able to defeat the strongest Genin by far which was gaara in the first series. BUt since then it doesn't seem like he has got much stronger, even after 3 years.
