Nara clan and potential offensive techniques?

Shikamaru has shown to be able to strangle his opponents with his shadow possession.
That being said, wouldn't it be fair to assume he could use his shadow as some sort of physical weapon?
Like a whip, or stretchable sword of some sort. If so, the Nara clan has the potentia to use more offensive moves instead of strategic/defensive tactics only.

well the shadows can kill some1 by penetrating the body(has been shown on hidan if i remember correctly)..it IS offensiv, however to do so they must first capture the enemies... and the shadows are pretty slow, so it requires good strategies ^^

honestly there is so much u can do with most of jutsu's we have seen... not just from the nara clan u just need a good imagination and then just watch all the possibilities drop from the sky xD

It's just that they are better with using and racking their brains than using any form of ninjutsu.

Indeed. I guess Kishi just wants character's to stay true to their own limited techniques
