Why was Konoha's White Fang considered an even greater legend than the Densetsu no Sannin?
I believe, to figure out this mystery, you must look at his son, Hatake Kakashi. I will not count the Sharingan, that is an Uchiha trait that doesn't belong in his family. I am saying his father didn't have it, and so I am analysing him without it.
He is better at tracking than the Inuzuka clan.
He has a humoungous variety of jutsu, over 1000, which he uses efficiently, effectively and flawlessly.
His intelligence rivals that of Nara Shikamaru himself, this is a huge feat in itself!
He has been known to use 4 different chakra natures in battle, Earth, Lightning, Fire and Water. That's largely because of the Sharingan, but I bet he would still be close to atleast 3 without it, thanks to his genius and talent.
A ninja prodigy that is worthy of carrying on his Father's hype. Created an S rank jutsu as a child, the Raikiri, although imperfect mostly because of his age and the Justsu's power.
What is his one true weakness that holds him back greatly? His Chakra!
Kakashi has very low reserves of chakra that limit and greatly affect his full fighting prowess. It can, at times be considered a handicap even, when going up against BIJUU's and Obito.
Now imagine his Father Sakumo, without that weakness!
Greater than Sannin level?
I would say so.
To get an idea of Sakumo's strength, imagine a Kakashi, with HUGE chakra reserves!
