I enjoy this side of philosophy dealing with existence.

I have never actually worked out a straight answer to this because it has never sat well with me, although a lot of evidence shows that we may in fact be different people every second that goes by. Let me give you a couple of examples:

1. We have vague memories of our childhood and none when we were babies. So it can be assumed that we rely on our memories to have a consciousness.
2. All the cells in our body our replaced over a period of around several years. Which indicates we are no longer made of the same matter.

There was this concept I heard awhile back that was talking about humans transcending to robots and replacing their brains to a mechanical one instead, it was done by replacing every neuron with a transistor (or whatever) and the human subject would be awake while this operation is happening. The question to this was at what point would you stop being you?

Now don't get this confused with emotions and such, I am only talking about personal identity (how you know your you right now). Plus please don't bring god or souls into this.

I remember having to study John Locke and his theory of personal identity and he mentioned all of your points(except the robot one)

I don't fully recall what his detailed answer was, but basically your memories is what gives you your identity.....not your body, and not your soul

If you have amnesia, you are no longer you....but just a newborn in your original body

Your mind evolves every second so my answer is no.

Well, if we're talking about the philosophical point of view of "when do we stop being us?"

Then i suppose we would all have different answers to this because we all have a different point of view and agenda.

so in my opinion.

we stop being our selves when we let others influence us.
theres a difference between genuine originality and "creativity through influence."

To me, genuine originality is an idea that was portrayed and generated by you through visual observation or any means of comprehension and awareness to the immediate surroundings or even the world around you. It could be similar to other peoples opinion or creativity but if it wasnt stimulated by others rather than the idea and world around you, then your concept is original.

if it was influenced by others and you've gotten your idea or creation through the inspiration of someone else then it is not your own idea. It is your re-endition of someone elses creation.

So you stop being your self when you start living your life through the shadow of others.

but lets face it, there are many centuries that has passed to our day. genuine originality isn't easy to attain.
so in this world we live in, In my honest opinion, we can attain genuine originality by understanding the world we live in today.

because if you can understand every aspect of society today, you can manipulate it and portray your own version of our society today, not what someone else has taught you.

this is the reason why i believe that educational facilities can somewhat stunt a person spiritual/artistic or general awareness' growth.
they're only being fed what "was" or what has already existed and not be taught their own unique point of view.

This forum somewhat surprises me, here i am assuming majority of you are just dorks who's really into a manga, turns out theres a few bright ones.

There's very few people on this base that are bright and it always varies on what type of subject is being debated.

i've been known to instigate a debate that i don't even fully support just for the sake of argument.
I suppose it'll be interesting to see more diverse threads in this forum.
