Let's say for the sake of the game that some scientists in a lab just discovered a new element that doubles its mass every second. Now they're developing an experiment: in a recipient they put a little portion of this new substance and start to check the way it grows bigger. The experiment lasts for a minute and right at the end, the recipient is completely filled. Now my question is simple:

1- How many seconds have passed when the recipient is half filled?

Tips: there's no importance on the size of the recipient, only in the fact that is filled in a minute time.
And also remember: every second, the new element DOUBLES its size, so....

Not a cat riddle, Wang, try this one and let me know how sharp you are...

1 second...it's easy. I mean 1 sec before he is fully filled.

Well...nope. Not the correct answer. The experiment goes for a whole minute so is impossible to take only one second. think harder.

..I said before he's fully filled...that is 59 sec from the beginning...same logic, just the other way round...

The recipient is half filled in 59 seconds...but did they put the element in the recipient's a$$? I just hope he got paid enough.

Tricky! Well I’m not so sure even after giving some time to it but I guess it would be…30 seconds?! :|

i give litlle easier warm up to main riddle =)

jack left to school and got run over by his dad, dad die in that accident while they treat jack in hospital doctor comes and say son!! you'll get better how the heck that is possible

Mass and Size are different. Mass deals with density while size deals with volume.

Wang gave the answer already. It's 59 seconds.

If it doubles every second, then all you have to do is remove one second from sixty seconds to find out the time when it was half the full amount.

Umm…I really don’t understand your logic, my friend! -___- + If Wang said that, it doesn’t mean it’s correct! :|
Sorry but I think you didn't read the question carefully, the one with number 1-...?

+ This problem has some diversions & I think you guys fell for it. (Just an idea!)

Nah, the man is full at the end of the minute, and the amount doubles at every second, so he is half-compared to the full at the end of the minute- 1 sec before the end of the minute. That is 59 sec from the beginning.

Btw, this is the correct way to reason through this...he's right, but not phrasing the answer the way you want to hear it. I know what you mean K, you iz da smrtest...he was 1st.

No wang is correct.

You need to re-read the question, and my explanation.

Just because you don't understand why the answer is 59 seconds, doesn't means he's wrong; that's just plain ignorant. I'm not intending to come across as 'mean', but you need to learn by taking in from others.

The answer is 59 seconds, no?

If he's full at 60 seconds, then 1 second before that (at 59 seconds) he was half full, since it doubles every second.

Yup, but who cares, we know what the OP asked and we know the answer...no big deal .

What the…?! :| Wow! No! Wait a second, my friends! My mind is totally f***ed up now! -___- I think I can see what the main struggle here is about!
My field was the humanities so I don’t understand too much about chemistry!:sy:I deal mostly with sentences & their structures not the subject itself, at least not that one!

Gosh! I have a very important question from you: Is “half” here an expression in chemistry lesson?!

The reasoning has nothing to do with chemistry.
