What was it that activated Kakashi/Tobi's Mangekyō Sharingan?

Which was it?

I just want to apologize in advance if this question has been asked multiple times.

But as for my question, I wanted to hear your opinion on this: Do you think it was Kakashi killing Rin, or Tobi witnessing it that awakened it? The stories say that to achieve it, you must murder your best friend, but... Rin? Kakashi's best friend? To be honest, I'd have assumed he didn't even have a best friend because of how cocky he was, but I don't know. But it is possible to have been Tobi, he did go through a lot of stuff before seeing them again for the first time in a while.

And please, don't say it was both. I'm interested in knowing what you thought it was most.

Well, it isn't just killing your best friend, it is also seeing them or someone you deeply care about die and then "feeling" it. That is your answer. /thread

So if Kakashi had just killed Rin and Tobi wasn't there to witness it, would he still have just got it out of nowhere, or not?

I strongly disagree :/. Obito unlocked his before Kakashi, obito probably unlocked his at the scene of Rins death and as for Kakashi, he probably unlocked his at the verge of death while facing pein.

I'm not sure how accurate this is.

It was obviously both, Kakashi got his from killing Rin and Obito got his from witnessing her death.

I'd say Obito witnessing it.
