Light could have saved his self a lottt of trouble if he just traded his eyes for the shinigami eyes...
IMO his worst mistake was when he killed Ray Penber (whatever his name was). I guess he didn't know better but things would have went a lot smoother if he waited for him to clear his suspicions.

But if he left Penbar alone entirely, suspicions surrounding him would have dropped. Killing them was too risky IMO. Why kill the detectives and raise the alarms when you can just wait for them to overlook you as an innocent? The death note's killing methods aren't really noticeable anyways from what the detective was doing.Light was smart because he killed all the FBI agents at the same time, L was only theorizing about Kira being in direct contact with Penbar, so there was no real evidence that Kira was one of the persons Ray was investigating.

I agree if he had to kill the FBI agents it would be the wisest move to kill them all at the same time though. Just didn't seem like the right move to make though considering the circumstances. I try to justify it by thinking that he didn't know how long the detectives will be on his case but it still doesn't flow well with me.
It's not a big mistake in the plot or anything like that since nobody is really going to mind it. If you can find an alternative reason for his actions then I'd actually appreciate that since it's been one of my peeves of Light's plans for a while.
Penbar noted Light as innocent, and after that Light waited 'til he investigated others, but the main reason why the persons who Penbar investigated became the most suspicious ones, was because of Misora Naomi's death. She was Penbar's fiance and was highly skilled FBI agent who worked with L in past. This was something Light couldn't have possibly prefict beforehand.

Well the entire idea is a matter of "low chance of risk so why not" vs. just leaving it alone. IMO the actual idea of killing them isn't note-worthy but it's not too suitable for flame either. I wouldn't take the risk if I were him but it's more justified since he didn't know better. Although the bus jacking was a pretty dramatic scene too that could raise some flags (and it did play a minor role in it).
