I've been thinking about all the different characters in Naruto and how they've all suffered living as a shinobi and I happened to think of Shikamaru and realized he's been through a lot of crap.
During part 1, despite not caring whether he became Genin or not, he became one and took on all the responsibilities of leading a team. His first mission was an utter failure and he nearly had everyone on his team killed for the sake of trying to save Sasuke. (that emo bastard...) and if he didn't feel bad enough at the time, Temari just kept teasing him not realizing just how hard he was taking everything. And as he walks away, his dad yells at him and tells him that his cowardice will lead to the death of more comrades if he just quits being a shinobi. simply said, his dad calls him weak and a coward. With the news of his comrades all being alive he breaks down and cries and promises to better himself.
During part 2, he witnessed Asuma die in front of him and blames himself for not thinking of a strategy. And then he had to deal with telling Kurenai about Asuma's death and how he would take care and protect their child. He then doesn't go to Asuma's funeral and doesn't mourn for his death. And then he has another break down and realeases all of his built of sadness and stress. After this he swears to take down Hidan and Kakuzu and puts himself in charge of organizing an asssalt which he knows is practically a suicide mission with only Ino and Choji as well. After defeating Hidan he realizes that his revenge led him to nowhere and that Asuma was dead either way things happened.
And to make a long story short. His father, despite knowing he would die in a matter of moments, stayed strong and relayed the plan to the Shinobi alliance. And without saying goodbye or even acknowledging Shikamaru, now he's dead.
And now he has to help fight against Madara and Obito.
The battle is only beginning and he's taken another huge hit. If you ask me, he needs a hug! (Temari would be nice
