The six paths is a religious theme, the third probably dealing with death.

EDIT: Everybody above me knows not what they talk about. The third path is the human path, which deals with the removal of the soul, or death in Nagato's case. Sometimes things are deeper than they seem to be people.

There are six paths in Buddhism, Kishi incorporated these into the sage of the six paths.


1st path. Deva path, the main pain, Tendō (main Pein) this path allows the set user to ,manipulate attractive, and repulsive forces.

2nd path. Asura path, Shuradō, grants user ability to summon mechanized armour.

3rd path. Human path, Ningendō, (the path that Obito refers to). Grants the user to remove the soul(death), or read minds.

4th path. Animal path, Chikushōdo, user is able to summon various creatures.

5th path. Preta path, Gakidō, user is able to absorb an infinite amount of chakra.

6th path. Naraka path, Jigokudō, grants the user two abilities interrogation, and restoration(bring other pains back to existence, by using the king of hell technique)
