We saw him fight only a few times.

First whe he was fight against Kisame. Even he has big physical strength, he wasn't able to carry Samehada and he was quite much injured by one Kisame's hit.

Second, he kill a few fodder chunnin level ninjas from Otogakure. It was impressive, but still.. they was fodders.

His last fight was against Hidan. He showed good Taijutsu skills. But it was the only thing, what he could to do. Hidan got his blood in 2-3 minutes.

So what do you think about him? Was he pretty strong ninja which only met with people who could suprise him (Like Itachi beat Kakashi in 1 second with Tsukuyomi) or he was fodder?

Considering he was a former member of the Twelve Guardian Ninja, I think you can hardly call him fodder. He was just put up against very strong ninja: Kisame was called the Tailless Tailed Beast and a lot of shinobi had problems with him. Hidan was dangerous as well, so it's no surprise he got eventually killed by him. He actually hold out long against Hidan considering he hadn't encountered him before.

So no I don't consider him fodder - he just had the bad luck he had very strong opponents.

He was the third-best jounin in Konoha after Gai and Kakashi.

If he had intel on Hidan he could have won that fight, so yes I do believe he was a pretty powerful ninja who had bad match-ups.

He could have been much better, as well. From what we know, he most likely developed his futon jutsu on his own. Had Danzo been Asuma's sensei, Asuma's futon would've been beast.

he was pretty unlucky on opponents, i mean, Hidan is LETHAL to ANY Close-ranged person + he had no intel on his abilities, AND he was able to fight even VERY BADLY injured, Kisame is 1 of the physically strongest people in whole Narutoverse :|

he was strong, very strong

A person like Asuma can't win against Hidan, he is not weak but not strongest either.

I think he was a very able ninja. The ash cloud jutsu he used combined with the fire style was cool

I think he was average Jounin level.
Yeah he wasn't the strongest shinobi, but he was a great sensei in my opinion.

There is no shame in having a hard time/losing against any akautsuki members. Wish we got to see him vs someone else.

No way a loser. Not a lot of people can go against Kisame and survive. Chuunins are very underestimated. Just because in the manga there are loads of powerful people under the title S-rank or Jonins doesn't mean that Chuunins are absolutely crap. The whole Hidan story: no info, Hidan had immortality, back up from Zetsu, but he still could take of Hidan's head before dying. It took a lot of powerful-ish people to take down Hidan and his partner, so Asuma is definitely not a loser.
