The White Bearded Wizard

The Meeting

Far over the Misty Mountains cold, a foggy road lies ahead, it goes through an ancient and dark forest, the light of the full moon filters through the top branches, and the marsh is covered by a thick fog, the eyes of a stranger watching over it. The wind slowly breezes through the forest, picking up dust and leaves from the ground, as dark shadows move through the forest; they can hear crackling branches, the smell of a swamp nearby and a silent whisper is heard throughout the forest. As the shadow moves through the dark night, a glimpse of a small fire in an opening not far in the forest, four small figures are sitting around the fire, laughing and drinking their hearts out, unknown to the shadow lurking in the dark.

Durin: “Ahh my friends… we have been on a long journey…”

Dain: “Indeed it has… I can’t wait to return home to meet our friends and have some rum!”

Farin: “Ahh and don’t forget the women!!!”

Telchar: “It will be great to return home to the Glittering Caves…”

Durin: “Now now… remember we still need to go to Dale and get the supplies before we can return home…”

Dain: “Hey Durin… take a break, we have earned it… after all we got the item we needed”

Durin: “I will not relax before we are home in our own halls… it is too dangerous to relax at this time”

Farin: “Durin take a break what could happen…”

Felchar: “A lot could happen actually… Farin, after all there are a lot of enemies who would not want us to have it…”

As the small company of dwarves sit around the fire, suddenly the small wooden piece that Farin sits on breaks in half and he falls flat on his face into the mud, while everyone is laughing and Durin’s meat over the fire catches fire and turns black, while they drink until they can’t stand and Dain watches his friends laugh and live their lives while he sits around the fire relaxed and watching over them like a hawk. Felchar walks into the dark to take a shit while everyone keeps drinking.

Dain: “You shouldn’t be drinking at such an hour… we are yet to return home”

Durin: “Aww you care for us…. Relax what could happen, we are in the middle of a dark forest with the fog covering the entire marsh so we can’t see anything and the moon is full… it’s a beautiful night”

Farin: “He is right Durin… we should stop drinking and plan our road ahead…”

While they are talking, Felchar returns while fastening his belt around his large waist and letting his hand roll down his long beard, he walks up and immediately takes a bottle of rum and sits down, beginning to drink again while looking at Dain with a worried expression.

Felchar: “My friend… why are you so worried about our situation?”

Dain: “Because of this forest, there is such a risk to being ambushed…”

Felchar:Well you should take a break and let me watch over everyone…”

Dain: “Alright… but keep your ears sharp… I thought I heard something before, but I wasn’t sure”

Felchar: “Just relax, I got this….”

As the small company sits around the fire, discussing their situation, and drinking more than they can handle, they try to decide which road to take, though it is the rum talking, they slowly begin to become dizzy and sleepy. The dwarves sit around the fire as suddenly a branch nearby breaks and echoes into the distance. The dwarves immediately rushes up standing back to back with their axes and hammers tightly held in their hands looking out into the dark as several shining green eyes in between the trees appear and slowly moves around their camp.

Farin: “Wh… what do you think they are…?”

Durin: “It is probably some wolves thinking they could get something to eat here”

Dain: “Probably… but why didn’t we notice them until now…”

Felchar: “Maybe because we are drunk you idiot…”

Dain: “Hey don’t you call me drunk!!!”

Durin: “Calm down everyone… they won’t attack us as long as the fire is going…”

Farin: "You’re probably right my friend, let’s get back to drinking…”

As the dwarves kept a sharp eye out for the mysterious creatures in the dark, they slowly turned around and sat down on their small wooden pieces and prepared to drink some more and pulled out a small map from each of their pockets and put it together. But just as they were about to lay down plans for their journey home, a giant cave troll smashed through a tree, cleaving the tree in half with its large axe, storming into the camp, followed by several goblins as the dwarves quickly reacted and before any of the goblins could react, Dain send his axe straight across the face of a goblin, cutting its head clean off.

Dain: “Everyone stand your ground!”

Farin: “What do you think I’m doing?”

Durin: “Kill them all! Don’t let them get the map!”

The giant cave troll ran through the camp and grabbed Felchar by his legs and looked at him with its big green eyes as it threw him with immense force into a tree and you could hear the iron slamming into the tree, and all the dwarves turned around to see Felchar lying beside the tree unconscious, with blood slowly dripping out from his armor. As they turned to see their friend, Durin slammed his giant sledgehammer into the ground releasing a powerful shockwave forcing the goblins to withdraw for a moment, while Farin quickly threw his axe sending it right into the back of a goblin, who collapsed in front of Felchar’s body.

Farin: “We can’t stay here…”

Dain: “I know… but we can’t leave Felchar…”

Farin: “But we will die if we stay!”

Durin: “We need to get Felchar out of here!!!”

Farin: “We can’t, we must leave him!”

Durin: “No we can’t lea…”

Dain: “Shut up and do as I s…”

Before he could finish his sentence the goblins returned in greater numbers, and the dwarves engaged into a large brawl where blades smashed into each other, several limbs from goblins flew through the air together with arrows raining down from above, while several axes smashed through the shields of the goblins cutting straight into their bodies and blood spilling everywhere. The dwarves using the goblin bodies as shields towards the arrows, as the giant cave troll returned with a massive hammer and send it crushing down towards Farin, sending several large pieces of wood and earth flying towards him, as he tried to dodge the hammer but instead was struck down with such force that his armor was pierced and blood flew out from his body and covered the surrounding ground in blood.

Durin: “Farin!!!”

Dain: “Durin we can’t focus on him right now!!!”

Durin: “But we must do something to help him!”

The battle raged on as Dain jumped over a small branches running towards the cave troll, sending his axe cleaving straight through the body of a goblin followed by him sending his own axe flying into the back of the giant cave troll, as he jumped into the stomach of a goblin breaking its neck, while Durin ran towards the cave troll from the front lowering his axe to make an upwards slash to its guts, as suddenly another giant cave troll appeared from behind and threw its giant chain around Durin’s legs sending him flying into several goblins and dragging him towards itself, while picking up a large piece of wood.

Durin: “Dain!!!”

Dain: “I’m coming!”

Durin: “ARGH!!!”

As Dain ran and jumped over several goblin corpses, he got overwhelmed by goblins from all sides, Dain fought bravely breaking several limbs of the goblins and trying to push them away, though after a short period of time, they tied him up with rope and cut his legs making him unable to walk. As the giant cave troll picked up the unconscious bodies of Farin and Felchar and Durin was being dragged by two goblins, as they prepared to leave the camp behind, they took all the food, tools and a piece of a map they found, while screaming out into the night signaling to the other goblins that they had the dwarves.

Durin: “Dain what is happening!!!”

Dain: “They are here to take back what we took from them!”

Durin: “Wh… what should we do?”

Dain: “We have to break free…”

Durin: “How?”

Goblin: “Shut up you maggots!”

Dain: “Don’t shut me up you freaking goblin…. You want taste my axe!!!”

As Dain looked up at the goblin, it slowly took out a large dagger and led it up to its face, licking the blade before putting it down to Dain’s chest, ready to pierce it. As the blade slowly cut through Dain’s skin his face expressed the tremendous pain, and the goblin began to smile with joy of finally getting the chance to kill the dwarf.

Goblin: “I’m gonna have dwarf for dinner…”

Dain: “ARGH!”

Durin: “Dain! Stop it you shit ass goblins!!!”

Suddenly a bright light suddenly exploded from the dark in the forest, right in front of the goblins, and the goblins immediately dropped the dwarfs down on the harsh and dirty ground, while the light burned through the goblins skin and the giant cave trolls fell to the ground, dead, after being struck by massive lightning. The goblins ran as fast as they could, running and jumping over dead corpses and branches on the ground, falling over each other in fear of dying. As they ran off, the mysterious man who attacked the goblins slowly picked up a piece of a map and walked up to the dwarfs lying on the ground.

As the bright light vanished the tall figure emerged from the shadows, walking up to the dwarves, wearing a grey cloak and a pointy hat, with a long white beard and shining blue eyes, wielding a large wooden staff, with several white crystals on the top. The tall figure approached the dwarves and freed them from their ropes and created several small fires around them revealing his face to the travelers, and slowly sat down in front of them on a small wooden lodge. As he sat down, Dain and Durin slowly sat up in pain while looking towards their friends before turning their attention to the mysterious man who just saved their lives.

Dain: “Who… Who are you?”

Olórin: “Young dwarf, I am a friend and that is not the proper way of introducing yourself”

Durin: “A friend… my name is Durin and this is my friend… Dain, would you mind telling us your name…”

Olórin: “I am a wizard… my name is Olórin, and I’m pleased to meet such fine dwarves as you four”

Dain: “Well Olórin, thanks for saving us… we are on our way home to the Glittering Caves, if you want to join us?”

Olórin: “Don’t say anything at all my friend, you do not need to thank me, but indeed I would wish to join you”

Dain: “It is settled then… but… we can’t get home, my legs are broken, Farin and Felchar over there are unconscious and Durin has a broken arm…”

Olórin: “Don’t think about that… I will help you”

As he says this he whistles into the night as a light shines down the road and as it approaches them, three bright white horses comes riding down the road, their hooves barely touching the ground and the dwarves watched them with amazement in their eyes, with the horses beauty and grace. As they stop right behind Olórin, the dwarves regain focus and look at the wizard, where he presented each and every one of the beautiful white horses as the three lords of the horses. He then saddled up on the horse in the middle.

Olórin: “These three horses are my oldest friend, the three lords of the horses and they have agreed to help me with your journey home”

Dain: “Thank you Olórin, we are in great debt to you”

Olórin: “Don’t say that… consider this as a friend helping you when you’re in the need of aid”

Durin: “Thanks, now let’s get on with our journey”

As the dwarves saddled up onto the two majestic horses while helping their two unconscious friends onto the backs of the horses, Olórin helped them taking all their items and tied them to the horses before he saddled up himself. Now their journey was about to begin, riding into the forest while the moon was low on the horizon and you could see the light of the day beginning to appear in the distance, revealing the entire camp and all the dead goblins and cave trolls. The birds began to wake up and fly through the forest, and the beautiful animals began to walk calmly through the forest searching for food and the flowers began to open and the beauty of the forest began to shine. Now the dwarves journey lies ahead, towards the Glittering Caves.
