Definately. If the uchiha incident hadn't have happened and he had found a way to get his ems without his friend dying, he would have been a definite candidate. However, if the uchiha incident didn't happen, then the third wouldn't have been killed, the akatsuki would still be a secret organization, and sasuke wouldn't have left to go to orochimaru. So, in other words, itachi needed to become the villian because without him,mthere would be no story.mat least in my mind there wouldn't be
