This leads people to believe that they were a team back then and after the fight oro left, then kisame was recruited later on and teamed with Itachi

Look at the flashback of orochimaru, where Itachi joins akatsuki and besides pain is standing oro, sasori and Kisame.

We all know that oro was partnered with sasori, but when Itachi joined akatsuki he tried to take his body, but then he had to flee.

Itachi was never partnered with Orochimaru.


OT: pain and konan is obviously the best team and in a close second would be kisame and itachi
