Lee's Training, Gai's Mistake?

We all know that Might Gai's protege, his number 1 student is Rock Lee. This being the shinobi he has chosen to carry on his legacy, has he made a mistake? Or to put it another way; was there a better candidate?

How powerful would Neji Hyuga become if he'd received the same preferential treatment Lee had? What happens when you combine the two most powerful forms of Taijutsu into one warrior?

(Note: I'm sorry if this has been done; I tried to do a search, but any combination of Neji and gates or any thing like that returned hundreds of entries, none of which I saw where about this.)

Neji wouldn't be proficient in normal taijutsu. He was trained and raised in the art of gentle fist from his clan specifically.

i understand ur thinking ... but the same could be said for naruto and sasuke.... kakashi immediately took a favour to sasuke and chose to train him above naruto and the others in the chuunin exams ....

from wat ive seen gai treats them all equal it just seems to me he favours lee because he is most like him and unlike neji, lee isnt a genius he has to work hard for wat he has more than anyone else just like gai did with kakashi

i think Lee is being underrated, and overrated at the same time. a lot of people think hes badass and could defeat a lot of people... however ive seen a lot of battles where he loses.. a lot. i dont get it, like he takes off his weights in season 6 part 1 and he cant do anything againt this other guy. also he is badass, like being able to open 5 gates is crazy. he could mess a lot of people up if he really showed some true Rock Lee Power. dont get me wrong i love lee.

Maximizing his potential as a taijutsu user with the access to the 8 gates has nothing to do with his particular fighting style. You don't do certain movements to open a gate, from what i've seen they kind of stand there powering up and yelling like a dragonball character. The way Rock Lee and Might Gai use this new found super strength, speed, etc. is the same because Gai taught Lee. It doesn't mean it's the only way. A Hyuga genius might come up with brand new, crazy awesome techniques to couple with the 8 gates. What happens with you have godlike speed with godlike reflexes thanks to Byakugan?

Well neji has a completely different type of taijutsu and I don't think guy would be able to train him well enough since gentle fist and regular taijutsu are so different. Also if I remember correctly idk if it was a filler or not but guy was trying to teach his whole squad the primary lotus and lee was the only one that was able to do it.

The answer might lay in the fact that Neji looks down on it. Or at least, the old him did. So early on, Neji didn't take the alternate taijutsu training seriously and is now lesser for it. NEVER TOO LATE TO LEARN NEJI!

Neji with EIG would be seriously powerful. Even Tenten would be a big threat to people if she was able to use the gates. However, I think Gai just liked Lee more than the others, he reminded him of himself. The will to challenge himself to the absoloute limit, not to mention the eyebrows.
It's also quite possible that the gates aren't available to everyone, since we've only seen two characters use them (that I remember) Maybe Lee was simply competible with the gates while Neji wasn't

It's not that he couldn't learn it, it's that the training to use the 8 gates requires severe dedication to the strong fist form and its techniques, which is completely opposite of his own fighting style.

Maybe the weird bowel shaped haircut is ritualistic, like a hand sign, and required to start opening the gates. That would make it forgivable.

The gates are available to everyone, but no one wants to further learn anymore than maybe the first or second gate because of the hard work required to open them and the drawbacks that come with using that power.

Gai and Lee are both devoted to taijutsu, lee only being able to use it, so their only option is to work hard to gain better taijutsu. because if this, they are able to utilize the gates power to fullest because of it.

Gai's training regimen takes a whole lot of will power to follow since it's insanely hard. Neji and Ten Ten can't keep up like Lee.

Kakashi stated that the EIG can't be opened by just anyone, and even most jonin can't open the EIG.
