Yoshino (Shikamaru's mother) had severe post-partum depression after giving birth to Shikamaru. For the first months of his life, she didn’t interact with him except when she had to feed him, and then she wouldn’t look at him or talk to him. He was cared for mostly by his father, and the Yamanakas and Akimichis. Yoshino has never been able to forgive herself for her behavior during that time, and the guilt causes her to be clingy and over-involved in Shikamaru’s life when he’s an older child and teenager.
