(Man, I hope it makes any sense to you guysxd)
Closing the gate behind him as he exited the Daikoku Wharf, Uric continued walking along the chain-link fence, …knowing in his heart that it would lead him to the dying Light. Faint drops of blood on the walkway only served to further confirm this.
"…You really believe that he’s still alive?"
It would appear that Shahim didn’t quite share Uric’s assurance.
"I asked Ryuk to stick around after Light dies. …He would’ve returned to find me by now if he was already gone."
"Oh? …And why did you ask him to do that?"
He closed his eyes and slowing reopened them, taking in a deep sigh as he did.
"…For the same reason I intended to set up Light to become Kira in the first place."
Searching his thoughts for his own recollection of the first night they met, he let out a sound of slight surprise as he found it, …though he stopped there, preferring to see if it would all play out as he thought it would.
"Uric, …just what are you up to, this time?"
"…He’s in there."
"Hm?"
They stopped at a large gap between the fence line, behind which was a small building…with the door slightly open.
"…I’ll be right back."
"Huh? What, you’re just gonna go in there by yourself?"
"…He can see you now that I’ve touched him with a piece of the Death Note, Shahim. And…I’d rather speak to him alone."
"…Eh, fine by me, I guess."
"Good. Just wait here, then. …This shouldn’t take more than a few minutes."
Taking a deep breath and relaxing his body the best he could, …Uric hesitated for a moment before stepping past the fence line and continuing toward the building.
"Why the hell am I so tense? This shouldn’t be that, …oh, who am I planning to deceive? …I know the answer to that question…as well as God does."
As he placed his hand on the door and proceeded to slowly open it, he caught sight of a single foot, lying motionless next to a few drops of fresh blood in front of what appeared to be, from Uric’s distorted perspective, a stairwell.
"…I hope I’m not too late."
…He wasn’t. Stepping through the doorway, he stood frozen as Light Yagami’s entire body came into view. From his appearance, Uric could only estimate how much strength…and time he had left. Taking a moment to retain his cold appearance, he stepped forward onto the stairwell, taking a seat beside Light, just as the latter looked up to acknowledge his presence.
"You…bastard!"
He attempting to reach his hand to grab him, ...but at this point in time, nearly all the blood had drained from his arm, rendering it almost completely immobile.
"…Hello, Light."
"...Hello? ...You son of-! What the hell makes you think you can just address me like that!?"
"…I’m truly sorry for this."
"What? …Sorry? And you really believe that’ll-!?"
"No, I don’t. ...I simply needed to tell you something else before you died, ...something that might be found rather favorable in your eyes."
"What the hell is he trying to pull now? …Why does he keep acting like he’s not the reason I’m dying right now!?"
"In truth, …I believe you to be a much smarter man than I am, Light. So, tell me. Out of every possibility, out of every single probable outcome that presented itself to me, …what were the odds that you would ultimately end up with a Death Note of your own?"
He didn’t respond. …His curiosity had obviously been piqued.
"Do you really believe that I alone was responsible for your actions? Face it, the odds that Ryuk would drop his notebook and that you would be the first to find it are virtually nonexistent."
"So, what…what are you saying? That I would’ve become Kira even if you hadn’t written down my name!?"
This time, …it was Uric who hesitated to reply. When he finally came to, he reached underneath his sweatshirt and pulled out a piece of crumbled paper.
"…Not even Shahim knows that I’ve kept this with me over the years. …I figured I would show it to you when this day finally came."
"And what is it?"
"...Originally, it was the first page of my Death Note. I intended on burning it when I decided to give it up to ensure your survival, ...then I noticed something rather…peculiar about the entry about you."
Unscrambling the paper to make the text appear legible again, he held it in front of Light for the latter to read. Taking a moment to look down the page, his eyes doubled in size as he caught sight of his name. ...Rather than ライト矢上, ...Uric had spelled ‘Light Yagami’ as ライトホ上.
"He…he misspelled my name!?"
The moment the look on his face confirmed that he was now aware of this fact, Uric pulled the paper away and began crumbling it up once again.
"Most likely the greatest mistake I’ve ever made, to be completely honest. …You see, Light? Everything you’ve done up until now, …all your sins committed as Kira…were done out of your own volition. …Under normal circumstances, I would hardly consider this to be a good thing for you, …but taking your swollen ego into account…"
However, to Uric’s surprise, …though not his shock, a soft chuckle emerged from Light’s lips, …which gradually built up to obsessive laughter.
"THIS PROVES IT, THEN! I AM KIRA…and now, my success will be carried out by you, Uric, …the new Hand of Kira, killing criminals in my absence!"
"…No."
"Huh?"
"All this proves is that I was not responsible for driving my best friend to become a maniacal serial killer. …When the opportunity presents itself, I’ll be sure to let the world know of Kira’s true intentions, hopefully ridding it of some of those pathetic creatures you call followers."
"…You. …YOU WOULD DARE TARNISH THE NAME OF KIRA, THE SAVIOR, …THE GOD!?"
Almost at his boiling point, Uric simply sighed and shook his head.
"I won’t waste my breath discussing false deities...or my plans with you, Light. ...I only came to bid you farewell...as an old friend."
"…You are not…my friend."
"…All the same."
Standing up, Uric looked down at Light one last time…and he looked back. With his hood down and the light emerging through the window shining over him, he seemed to bear a rather strong resemblance to…
"…L? …No, that…that can’t…be…"
His eyes becoming heavier with every fraction of a second, …it wasn’t long before they were completely closed. And so, …Light Yagami faded from existence at the age of twenty-three.
"Good-bye, …my friend."
"I’ll be joining you soon enough."
Good-bye
