To start this thread off, I must say that I personally am a Suigetsu fan but iam going to try and be unbiased.

Location: Forest, during a cloudy day

Suigetsu Hozuki

Suigetsu is a capable fighter, or at least very confident in his abilities, since he has threatened Sasuke on more than one occasion and was capable of stopping Jūgo's rampage with little difficulty. Kisame has noted him to be a child prodigy in the art of murder, and that he is practically the reincarnation of Zabuza.

Hōzuki Clan Techniques and Nature Transformation
As a member of the Hōzuki clan, Suigetsu is well versed in the clan's secret techniques. Suigetsu is able to transform his body into a liquid form, and to return to his solid bodily form at will. This ability also allows him to change his body shape, giving him the ability to increase the size of his limbs, thus proportionally increasing his strength if necessary. It also makes striking him somewhat difficult; since he is made of liquid, any regular strike will go right through his watery form. When struck, part of the water he turns into can also split from his body, and be used to attack others, for example, making a water blob around one's head to drown them. As his body is water, he is also capable of merging with already existing water to increase his attack range, as seen when he fought against Killer B, and to use Water Release techniques.
Suigetsu is seen carrying water bottles with him, as he frequently needs to consume water in order to stay hydrated. Due to his water-like body, he exhibits weakness against lightning-based techniques, as exhibited in his defence of Sasuke against Killer B's chakra-charged strike against Sasuke.

Kenjutsu
From his training days with the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist, Suigetsu is quite adept at wielding Zabuza Momochi's Kubikiribōchō. However, he lacks the high degree of physical strength Zabuza had, as carrying the sword around for long distances seems to tire him out, and makes it necessary for him to drink more water. However, he partially makes up for this with his Hydrification Technique, which allows him to expand the muscles in his arms to help him wield such a heavy weapon with more ease.

Speed and Skills
Suigetsu also seems very fast witnessed when he got away from A's assault against Jūgo and almost got C from behind unexpectedly until Darui stopped Suigetsu from landing his assault and he was fast enough to intercept Killer B's attack on Sasuke. He is also skilled as he was able to clash toe-to-toe with an powerful opponent like Darui even with the Kubikiribōchō broken in half.

Techniques and Weapons
Drowning Water Blob Technique:After liquefying a portion of his body, Suigetsu manipulates the resulting water to surround his target's head, preventing them from breathing in order to either: render the victim unconscious or ultimately kill them, if the suffocation is sustained.
Hydrification Technique:A protean, whole-body technique whereby the user liquefies their entire body at will, making it impossible to receive damage from physical attacks. From a single hair, to the skin and muscles, everything can be liquefied and solidified at will. Be it to evade an enemy's attack during a short range battle, to infiltrate a structure, or to launch a surprise attack in a liquefied state, this technique boasts a high strategic value. Applying this technique, the user can also modify their body parts for suitable situations.
the only way to contain a user of this technique is to lock them up in an airtight container so they cannot move about.
* The down side to this technique is Lighting, As when facing opponents such as Darui, Killer B, Sasuke, Kakashi etc etc.
Water Release: Demon Fish:After using his Hydrification Technique to merge with a water source, Suigetsu can form a giant wave that looks like a demon-like fish. Suigetsu can use this form to battle larger opponents, or he can use it to shield allies from attack.
* Down side to this attack is, It can block a TBB but it was not strong enough to withstand a Tailed Beast Ball.

Suigetsu's main weapon is Kubikiribōchō:Like the other weapons employed by the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist, the sword possesses a unique power, this being its ability to reform itself using the iron harvested from the blood of its victims. This regenerative process takes place almost instantaneously and is capable of bringing the weapon back to its original condition no matter how severe the damage is.

Gaara

Gaara is an extremely powerful shinobi, so much that he was made Kazekage at the age of 15. His powers and status have now become well-respected and praised by everyone in the Allied Shinobi Forces, including other Kage, both the current and previous ones with the Second Mizukage going as far as to call him the "golden egg amongst the Kage",and his father who acknowledged that he had surpassed him in more ways than he could have hoped for.

Sand Control : During battle, Gaara rarely moves, attacking with his sand from a single location. As the second element of his combat style, Gaara has a number of sand-based defences to be used in case an opponent gets too close. His primary defence is his Shield of Sand, an automatic sand shield that surrounds and protects him from damage whether he wants it to or not. Gaara can control the shield to some degree, strengthening it to steel-like quality or calling upon it to completely encase himself.

Techniques and weapon
Gold Dust: this sand gold could be fashioned into a diverse range of forms, which the Fourth Kazekage employed to assault opponents and intercept hostile attacks.[1] By constructing more complex structures, he could use it to perform even more intricate tasks, such as observing an area from afar with the Third Eye. (Gaara incorporated some of his father's gold dust into his own sand in order to both cool and weigh down the Mizukage's exploding clone, after the clone's own heat fused the gold onto its body.)

Shield of Sand:Gaara can completely surround himself in the shield to further increase his defensive capabilities. He then uses the Third Eye to watch his opponents' movements and control sand as necessary to battle them. In addition to being extremely dense, this sand-sphere can form spikes from its surface to spear any would-be attacker.

Desert Layered Imperial Funeral:Using a large quantity of his sand, Gaara covers the enemy with several successive layers of the material, before compressing it into the form of a huge pyramid which acts to imprison the target upon its completion.

Gaara's main weapon is Sand: It was also noted by both Gaara's father and uncle that the sand would always protect him, because it possessed his mother's will within it. Since this revelation, many of Gaara's techniques have begun to adopt the appearance of his mother.

Sand includes a wide variety of minerals, and Gaara can select the hardest minerals to create stronger defences and, in the anime, offences. However, Gaara also possesses the capability to incorporate other materials into the sand, increasing its versatility even further by introducing substances that can alter its properties to a certain degree, such as gold and hail.

Note
* That Water goes in between the grains of sand so before just choosing Gaara think about how Water effects sand.

*I Believe this match can go either way, Gaara being a Kage means nothing sense they are in a pretty even fighting area; It might just come down to who can hit who first.

Please leave a comment and I will respond ( To those who use logic)

And Remember we are all basers , so be :hey::hint::hey: Respectful.

Suigetsu is pretty strong, fast and durable but he is outclassed here. All Gaara needs to do is disarm him and bury him somewhere or seal him in a sand pyramid. Suigetsu can't overpower nor out speed current Gaara's sand defence. If Gaara starts flying, Suigetsu can't do anything. Suigetsu's demon blade isn't getting through Gaara's defence when five susanoo swords were barely able to do the same.

I think you should compare Suigetsu to part 1 Gaara. It would be a much closer fight.

Current Gaara stomps low difficulty.

Nice Analysis and Great thread but I think it would be fairer if Suigetsu was near a ocean.

A great underestimation of Suigetsu's abilities, normally i would agree with you on this verdict but unfortunately Suigetsu is a Hozuki. Every time he's about to be captured/buried, what stops him from liquefying himself ?

The same goes for him melting through Gaara's Ultimate Sand Defense and attacking from there with the tech he exhibited at the Five Kage Summit (attempting to suffocate the person by liquefying into a sphere over their head).

Though Gaara could use the ground in the forest, the fact stays that Suigetsu can liquifidy his entire body so physical attacks are useless against him. Like already mentioned, electricity attacks harm him but considering Gaara can't use electricity attacks and relies heavily on his sand, this would be a very tough match.

Hm, I think it could go both ways but it won't be an easy win for either of them

I personally don't know much about the two shinobi in depth but after reading the description you've given about the two shinobi, I also have to agree that it can go either way. Suigetsu can use his water against Gaara since sand is weak against water(it'll just turn to mud). But on the other hand, if Gaara manages to cover Suigetsu with sand which he is very likely to do considering the kind of jutsu he has, then Suigetsu will turn into a 'mud sculpture'. xd

Gaara is portrayed at a higher level. Suigetsu lost to a Kage bodyguard, Gaara is a Kage. Hence, Gaara > suigetsu IMO.

The only main problem I can see in this fight is Garra being able to fly (on his sand) so he can attack from long range.
Since Suigestsu is a close range fighter it will be a tough fight and will be hard to land a hit on Garra.

The problem for Suigetsu is he will get hit with Sand Tsunami and get buried 200M under the ground.

Darui isn't just any Kage body guard, Darui is kinda Boss dude there is no way Suigetsu was going to take down someone who also has water nature plus lighting . So that doesn't really make sense.

Good question, when i was researching what will water do to sand it stated that water will go through the grains of sand , so i don't believe so.
Even though this is a manga, I was trying to use some real life logic to it; you know.
