Nobody with half a brain thinks that way, but political parties funded by defense contractors and the media use peoples fear and ignorance to get them to watch TV so they can sell another airplane and sell them the latest brand of toothpaste. The U.S. spends 6 times the rest of the worlds budget on defense combined.
One of the greatest fears that President Eisenhower had after WWII was related to defense companies. They had become such a part of the make-up of the economy that he was worried that there would be no way to dismantle it. The problem with a bomb is that once made there are only two things you can do with it, put it on a shelf or go blow something up. It doesn't continue to produce efficiency and drive additional jobs, unlike a car or computer. Now if you go blow something up then that does create additional jobs (Haliburton) but it also wreaks untold misery and suffering upon the world. So many of the brightest minds go into these fields vs going into the private sector and developing new, better, safer advances that would benefit the world. Sad.
