For using gimp, quite nice. I'm not a gfxer, but I use gimp to make my wallpapers so I can vouch for how much of a pain in the ass it can be to use. Granted, I just pulled 2.8.x from the repos, and I'm liking it a lot more than 2.6.x.

for the avatar change the border settings (normal, light only, overlay that sort of stuff) and you will find the border can be changed to make it look even better but overall i like both
