after reading chapter 605 i personally think that kakashi only got the ms because obito was there to witness rin's death
if obito wasn't around i think kakashi eye would still be a 2tomoe sharingan

i think it was the combo of both or their raging emotions at that moment that lead to the jump from 2 tome to ms meaning it was a joint effort

Madara said both eyes need to be together to release the powers they hold in this case Mangekyō Sharingan. If kakashi killed rin and obito was not there, would he have gotten the Mangekyō? That's the question. Even if kakashi meet the requirements of awakening the Mangekyō, feeling the emotions of killing a friend, what would have happened.

Kishi also as to explain how obito's blank right socket got to see the image of rin thorough kakashi's eye.

They both got it by seeing Rin die.. You get the MS by having the person closest to you die... Not necessarily killing them, once Kakashi got the sharingan, Obito, his closest friend had already died, so the next candidate was Rin. Kakashi was awake to kill Rin and they both saw their closest friend die.. That trauma awakens the MS, so neither of them got it due to the other.. They both got it because they both saw Rin die.

In order to unlock MS, you need both eyes as stated by Madara. Since obito was near kakashi,the eyes were linked. (this can be seen when he saw the image of Rin dying before arriving to the battlefield). Therefore, since both eyes were linked, Kakashi, killing his best friend Rin, awakens his MS which causes Obito to awakens his. So in the end, they both needed each other to awaken the MS.

I think he saw that happen through Zetsu honestly.. Because if he saw it through Kakashi's eye then that would mean Kakashi could sometimes see what Obito see's and that just sounds too farfetched because he had no idea that Obito was alive
