How does Rinne Tensei work

So I've been thinking for a while.Does the user have to die when performing the Rinne Tensei technique on 1 person ?
Or maybe it's just that Nagato used it on the entire village.The wiki didn't give much info,but here is the link anyway

Does anyone know or atleast have a theory of how Rinne tensei works.I would be happy to hear it.

well Nagato didn't die because the technique cost you your life, but because he was drained of chakra because of Chibaku tensei
and its mechanism is that Nagato uses his seventh path (Gedo) to summon the king of hell (Naraka path summon) who resides the world of spirits (outer path as persumed when Madara said that obito is between life and death) and summon those souls back to the normal world and return them to their respective bodies +rep for the good question

Rinne Tensei, litrally meaning "Heavenly Life Reincarnation", as the name suggests it revives any person you desire, at any amount of targets.

When someone dies there soul leave there body, Rinne Tensei just puts the soul back into the body.

As for the user, he doesnt die, under some circumstances the user dies, such as a lack of chakra(Nagato died this way)

If you use all your chakra up you might end up pretty much dead, as Multiple Shadow Clone takes a hefty amount of chakra, you could die, such jutsu's are considered "Forbidden".

So your answer is no you don't die using this jutsu, Nagato simply died because he depleted his chakra completely using this jutsu, since he had litrally almost no chakra.

Yep, any jutsu that can harm life (yours or any others) is considered Forbidden. Some conditions dont apply if you have loads of chakra.

Lol not in that sense, in a sense of if you use this jutsu its possible you can die instantly if you're not strong enough.

Rinne Tensei - an jutsu that can only be utilised by an rinngean possessor that brings back a ninja or a collection of ninja's as seen in the Pain Arc

the user does not have to do for an person/ collection of people to be revived. it was just that nagato was already depleted his chakra levels that he was weak and died after using rinne tensei.

so i reckon, an healthy rinnegan user can probably bring back anyone , numerous times before the user's chakra decreases
