I don't know it's reasonable to think that he's dead but I doubt it, if Kubo was to make Byakuya die he would involve Hisana in it so I don't think he's dead.

he to much of a central character to die right after the begining of a new arc.....how many times have we seen a character presumably to be dead only to some how survive an win.....example when rukia was fighting espada number 9 she was ran through with a trident her eyes faded to the point of being considered dead only to rise an kill her opponent....the same will happen in the next few chapters
