Sarutobi being able to handle the 1st, 2nd and Orochimaru while being confined in a space by the sound 4 is a testament to how powerful he was. Hiruzen also had keen senses, being able to track down the former Hokage under Hashirama Senju's Bringer-of-Darkness Technique. Enma commented on his battle with Orochimaru, saying that it was miserable compared to his prime, even though he had clearly been able to hold his own against Orochimaru and two former Hokage without losing his composure. He still had the skill and agility to place explosive tags on both the first and second hokage's legs at the same time. Knowing all the techniques of Konoha hes probably developed defences against them. Even in his old age, his chakra was noted for being very strong, causing a dense effect on the atmosphere when released furthermore, he was known for having immense reserves of chakra in his youth. People might say a person like Itachi would get him in a genjutsu. The 3rd being a student of the 1st and 2nd probably taught him how to counter the many Sharingan techniques. Hiruzen was also called The Professor (プロフェッサー, Purofessā), due to his mastery of all forms of shinobi combat, and his vast knowledge of techniques, purportedly knowing all the techniques within Konoha. He was admired as The God Of Shinobi and Only him and the Sage Of Six Paths share the nick name God Of Shinobi

He was old and had very little chakra while fighting Orochimaru. One of the Anbu members mentioned that his primary fighting style was to fight with Shadow Clone just like Naruto but he had to reserve his chakra so he only brought 2. Using Rasengan or Chidori would have drained his chakra too much. It wouldn't be a smart thing to do. The only way was to seal both the Hokages. He was able to counter Tobirama and Hashirama in close combat, despite them being in their prime in the Summoning Impure World Reincarnation. Even when robbed of his sight from the genjutsu Bringer-of-Darkness Technique, he could still defend himself from Hashirama's and Tobirama's assaults, blocking all their attacks to prepare for his Dead Demon Consuming Seal. After summoning Enma, he could break Hashirama's Wood Release branches with ease. Even when someone as powerful as Danzo was dying he admitted that Hiruzen Sarutobi was steps ahead of him still. Strength, Speed and Stamina have all been hindered because of his old age. Sarutobi was said to have monsteres strength compared to the other Hokages. His strength would have most likely been and 4 because of being able to lift the heavy Enma pole at old age with some difficulty, Let's say in prime he could have lifted Enma with ease. Almost all the jounin's speed have a speed average of 4. His speed is very fast even in his old age. His prime would have been much faster but not as fast the 4th Hokage or Guy. I'd give him a 4.5 for being able to match speed evenly with Orochimaru at old age which means his speed back then must have been a lot better.
His stamina was greatly decreased becuase of old age. But his chakra made a dense affect on the field. It was said his primary style to fight with was the shadow clone which he couldn't do too much or any other Konoha technique because of low chakra. As we all know Shadow Clone Jutsu requires a lot of chakra. To have his primary style be Shadow Clone must mean his Chakra back in prime must have been much higher. It would have been like Naruto without the Nine Tails. It would have been 4.
All the rest of the scores have a perfect 5 in Ninjutsu, Genjutsu and Taijutsu which is impressive considering his old age. In total his data book score would have been 37.5 surpassing both Itachi and Jiraiya who have 35.5 as the highest in the data book. Just IMO :)

Too bad Hashirama is stronger.

too bad Itachi got killed by a Emo

@TO when he was fighting against the 2 Hokages, they were much weaker than usually, but anyway 69 year dude, yes I also believe he is the strongest of all Kages.

but Naruto surpassed all 5 and even Madara, only Edo is stronger.

and Obito ..

Well I agree that he was no ordinary shinobi but let's face it I'm pretty sure Oro's edo had some sort of drawback that limited the 1st and 2nd's abilities. Nice job for at least explaining your reasons though.

YES! The God of Shinobi for sure dude. Too bad he was old and worn down when he fought the 1st 2nd and orochimaru. I would love to see him in his prime.

Kishi has said in and interview that he and the 4th are neck and neck for the strongest shinobi. Also when youre such a good ninja that youre given the name "God of Shinobi" that pretty much means hiruzen > anyone (execpt s06p). But then again weve never seem his prime. So we have to base this all off hype

Something is seriously wrong if people think Hiruzen can keep up with any of the top tiers fighting right now ... Please dont get me, or anybody with capable brain matter started on this

Last time I checked:

  • Orochimaru was completely taking over Hashirama and Tobirama, which means they weren't moving on their free will.
  • Orochimaru did not have full knowledge about either of their moves.
  • Orochimaru said that he was playing around and wanted him to know the feeling he felt of fighting his former master.
  • Most Wood Release techniques are large scale techniques. Look at Madara's use of it.
  • There's a showing that Tobirama's use of Water Release in Part I pales in comparison to just about every other Water Release user in Part II, even though he's supposed to be one of the best.

That was great. I was actually thinking of making a similar thread.
Hiruzen while in his prime as said to be the strongest ninja. and strongest kage of his time (as you said)
you have to take into account that during his time some of the strongest
Kages we've seen were active. People say that Prime Hiruzen its featless, so is SO6P
but people don't say he would lose to Madara.
Why?
Because of his Hype.

Hiruzen had a huge hype as well.
So big as to be called "God of Shinobi"

If you had "capable brain matter", you wouldn't even be considering comparing part 1 and part 2.

What people fail to understand is Hiruzen vs Oro/Hashi/Tobirama was considered a kage-level battle in part 1. The only people who came remotely close in power to them were the other 2 Sannin and Itachi.

People would be much better off if they just considered part 1 and part 2 completely different mangas. Power scaling doesn't make Hiruzen's fight any less impressive for the simple fact that if that fight were in part 2 it would be comparable to the power of the fights in shippuden.

People spout that power scale BS yet fail to realize it would apply to people in part 1 who didn't get to have feats or only limited feats in part 2. Hiruzen's feat is no less impressive as the context and power scale of it(which was a kage-level battle) would be the same.

yep ... i still think that hiruzen at his prime was the strongest shinobi ever lived its just my opinion, the manga now is kind of saying that hashi is the strongest, but i don't even know why i think that hiruzen in his prime was the strongest. all i can say is that he was for sure way beyond jiraiya and itachi i mean he handled a fight like that (even if they were zombies not the real ones) at a very old age a state that was considered a complete joke to his prime, now that should tell you that this dude was a true MONSTER .... R.I.P hiruzen :T_T:

Those who had seen Hashirama's power , considered it a fairy tale like the SO6P. o-o Sarutobi has really has nothing on the Giant power of Hashi-boy. I would put him as the second strongest.

Of course obviously Hiruzen's feat was atleast a mid kage level feat. The poster that you replied to said that Hiruzen can't keep up with top tiers which is true though since those top tiers, even with powerscaling, are too powerful for old Hiruzen to defeat. Prime Hiruzen is a different story though but if we look at the context of the manga, old Hiruzen is definetely mid kage level while prime Hiruzen is most certainly high kage level. Also some of the jutsus used later on in part 1 seemed just as impressive as some kage level feats in the first 100 chapters of Naruto which is why people underrate Hiruzen.

If we look at their jutsus alone, old Hiruzen is low kage level but I agree that with power scaling, he is definitely mid kage level although not top tier.

And you fail to realize that even if hiruzen and anybody else had the correct power scaling it wouldnt change a thing. The only jutsu hiruzen had that could harm the elites is his summon enma (not counting reaper death seal), and even that has severe limitations now

Yes Hiruzen is the strongest of all time. Kishi said it himself in the manga. He wouldn't call someone God of shinobi, if he wasn't the strongest.

Usually the way you differ old school naruto fans from new school, is through asking them about this. Those who read naruto from the begging (me included), will say Hiruzen, rest wont, cause they probably read the first 300 chapters in 2 or 3 weeks..

Only old school will understand this..

I wont say Hashi isn't stronger, but there is no doubt that Hiruzen was the most skilled shinobi of all time, thus rating him in top 5 of the strongest shinobi of all time as well..
