You need both eyes like Madara said to use its full potential and then he will need another pair of MS to obtain EMS and then he has to do whatever Madara did to gain his Rinnegan.

What I dont get is howcome he never attemped to assasinate kakashi and retrive his old eye back.

He knows having both his eyes would be extremely formidable.

Plus he could've awakened his own set of rinnegan eyes. Hes infused with hashirama.

Why cant he do any wood style techniques?
