I think that using the Reaper Death Seal to put someone away is a very self defeating way to end it. You have been defeated in battle to the point where the only way you can beat your opponent is to doom yourself and the person to eternal torture.
In the case of The Third vs. Orochimaru, if you're thinking of the 1st and 2nd Hokages as rational people or people with human characteristics similar to real world situations think on this. Based on the situation at the time, when they were summoned and the Third began to use to Seal as a last resort, it was a very selfish move by him and if the former Hokages were thinking in some form, it is only likely that they would probably have been both against the idea of the fate that was about to be brought upon them and saddened or disappointed by the fact that the Third was not good enough to think of another way to win the battle.
In the case of eternal embattlement within the belly of the Shinsingumi, that decision as to who should be put to that should not have fallen on the Third. I know it's a manga and that is how Kishi wrote it, but if you're thinking of the people in a more realistic sense, the Third should not have submitted the previously dead Hokages to go from their peaceful end, to such as they were given.
Also, it would have been better if Oro had killed him, because Orochimaru would have been beaten either way even with the Edo Tensai Kages b/c just look at it that the entire village was out and about and guys like Kakashi, Gai, Tsunade and all of these people were around and could beat Oro.
