madara with kurama was going to kill hishi but he failed because in manga it clearly states that hishi wife sealed kurama in herself to take its control away from madara and as we all know it takes a crap load of chakra to control kurama so hishi probably only beat him due to the fact after kurama was taken from him hishi had more chakra:shrug:

unless, Mito was the one who took control of Kurama away from Madara then basically what she did was to use her clan's fuinjutsu to make sure that Madara would not take control of Kurama back. Hashirama did all the hard work, give the man some credit.
