So madara was greatly wounded in his battle with hashirama and so decided to fake his death and then escape so he could hide and let his wounds heal and plan his revenge. So he did.
Soon after he discovered he had some of hashi's DNA and so began experimenting with it, he spent decades experimenting and planning his revenge but as the years went by and as he watched the world, watched danzo and hanzo and oros devolopements he knew he was still incapable of completing this plan......soon after doing more experimenting he unlocked the rinnegan, but in his old age he knew that he wouldn't be able to use its power to its fullest or any of his powers to his fullest, so he decided to create rinnegan eyes using hashi DNA and sharingan eyes he took from dead uchiha and implanted them in Nagato because:
1. He was an uzumaki so he had a massive chakra pool to use the rinnegan techs freely*
2. He witnessed his parents die so he knew he could use the tragedy and his hate against war to manipulate him, and give him a crazy idea for achieving peace.
But he knew Nagato wouldn't be able to do it alone so he set out to find an uchiha, he wanted someone of his own clan because he believed them to be the only ones trustworthy and capable but he also needed someone who was desperate and easy to manipulate*

Meanwhile orochimaru had been experimenting with the firsts DNA and ended up creating Yamato for one but he also accidentally ended up with zetsu, zetsu being two failed hashi DNA experiments that ended up fusing somehow during experimentation. Zetsu escaped oro and ended up running into madara, madara had been experimenting with hashi DNA himself so he knew a lot about it so he offered to help zetsu and take care of him if he served him.
So then he ordered zetsu to spy and search for a suitable uchiha to help madara, luckily he found obito who had just been crushed by rocks. He informed madara so then madara came and saved him, probably with the rinnegan tech. But as madara expected obito had lost his memory so madara gave him a false story of what really happened to him and rin feeling him with hate and evil (which explains someone like obito turning evil).
With madaras mastery of hashi DNA he was easily able to use zetsu DNA to replace obito's damaged body parts (the head trauma from the rocks could also explain his split personality disorder, I referring to goofy tobi of course) then he told obito to work on collecting the tailed beasts and eventually form a group with Nagato later because madara was going to kill himself.....the reason being because he knew it would take years for tobi and Nagato to be ready and collect the tailed beasts and complete his project and he was gonna get older and older so he wanted Nagato to bring him back when it was "time" so he would still be powerful enough to complete the plan, which is why tobi freaked out when kabuto summoned madara because that could ruin their plans! And why madara said it wasnt time yet when he showed next to obito and seemed annoyed he had been brought back then tobi explained Nagato betrayed them changing their plans a little.
